      Strange Noise Margin

      Hi guys,

Was just after a bit of advice as to whether it would be worth me upgrading to SKY Unlimited when i came across something strange when getting together my connection stats. They are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 36 db 20 db
Noise Margin 7 db 2147483647 db

Now i was going to ask with these stats what sort of connection could i hope for if i upgrade but looking at it what is going on with that noise margin?! Ive tried resetting the router and reconnecting the wires and all is the same. Anyone seen this before, I'm new to all this so go easy

      Thanks for your help

      Possibly a bug or similar.

We estimate your line is capable of between 10mb to 12mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

Hi I thought I had seen the answer somewhere
Many routers can't display negative numbers, so they end up displaying huge positive ones.

      Re: Strange Noise Margin

I take it a negative noise margin is cause for alarm then?! Though i was under the impression when the margin falls below 5 it causes disconnects but ive never had an issue with it before. Should i be worried about this?

      Cheers

      Re: Strange Noise Margin

Only on the V1 Netgear DG834GT routers was this issue really an issue, before the FW update.

The new V2 Netgear and Sagem routers tend to cope with very low NM's - Mine has been to 0 and still remained connected.

      Re: Strange Noise Margin

I'm new to all this so go easy
As in a new Sky customer or new to the technicalities of ADSL?

With your downstream noise margin at the target 7dB you are at the maximum speed your line can handle with your current setup.
With the line speed checker showing a potential 10-12 Mb/s you may have problems with your internal wiring.

A description of how you are set up (master socket, socket you are plugged into, telephone extensions, filters, where the Sky box is connected etc) would be useful.
Have a look in the Cabling and faceplate help section for more information.

If you have an NTE5 master socket (with the horizontal split line) remove the lower faceplate, plug the router via microfilter into the test socket inside and take another set stats and post them.
Check that any other extension sockets you have are dead.
This will eliminate your internal wiring.

      Re: Strange Noise Margin

Thanks for the help so far, just coming back to this. Randomly i changed the DSL wire between the router and the microfilter which is plugged into the master socket. On reconnection the noise margin went from negative up to 27db. However after about 1-2mins it then went back to the silly high number. Now this seems very strange, do you think its just a bug with the router? I get the same stats through the test socket. Anyone seen this before? Its not really a problem as i connect fine and don't really suffer any disconnects, I'm just curious more than anything.

      Thanks guys

      Re: Strange Noise Margin

Could be a faulty micro filter.

To go back to your original question, as you are on ADSL2+ at the moment ,you will get exactly the same as you have. However you should get much more, 13-14 Mb I would think.

On reconnection the noise margin went from negative up to 27db. However after about 1-2mins it then went back to the silly high number
This could be the sign of a faulty filter or problems with your internal wiring. If you have a Test socket, link below, plug in there and post your stats.
