      Angry Nothing but annoying problems

      Where do I begin!?!

I've been a sky broadband customer for over 2 years now and I've had nothing but problems, firstly, due to BT wholesale's inept way of thinking I'm stuck on an exchange that is located 6km away from my home rather than the exchange which is less than a minute up the road from where I live. I've had two engineer visits from sky and they've placed a cap on my line for only 1mb which I'd be happy with if I even received that speed any more! When I first went with sky for my broadband I was connecting at 2mb and then that started to decline until I started only connecting at 128kb! which isn't even broadband.
So yes, anyway, after the 2nd engineer visit they performed a "life and shift" and provided me with a BT adsl faceplate for my main socket, all was well and good for a few weeks then the problems started again, I'm currently connected at 480kbps which is better than 128kbps but i've had it at 862kbps, and I'm just getting very fed up now with my net connection, a friend of mine who lives technically further from the exchange gets 1.6mbps and we're both on the same exchange so why am I only get 480kbps and he's getting 1.6mbps

Your router stats would be a start

Get them from the current location and also the test socket (see sig for details). This is important and worth the extra effort if we are to have a chance of helping.

      Re: Nothing but annoying problems

In which case unless you have a line fault you will not get any more speeds

If you use the phone and press one number and listen, you should hear a faint humm, nothing else, no pops or crackles, give it a go.

      Re: Nothing but annoying problems

No hum when I used to get 2mb my noise margin was at 13-15db then sky lowered that to 7db. It's like I said though, a guy who lives technically further away from the exchange due to the way the lines have been laid in my area he's getting 1.6mb which makes no sense

      Re: Nothing but annoying problems

I know it sounds like it makes no sense but his line may take a shorter router than yours or may be better quality.

I cannot see how you could get better speeds with that line, it sounds like it has aged or been damaged. You could always try to get BT to try a pair swap but I'm not sure the best way to go about that.

      Re: Nothing but annoying problems

What is a pair swap? is it anything like a "Lift & Shift"? but line quality argument could hold some weight
