      Wireless internet works, wired doesn't.

Hello, I'll explain my situation briefly.

I am currently housesitting for my sister for some time so I brought my computer through, she's with Sky the same as me so I assumed there'd be no issues, as I recently returned from Uni and there was no issues at my parents, simply plugged the ethernet cable in and connected.

However this is not the case here. I plugged the cable in and it would not connect, I got the yellow warning sign on the connection status and in Network and Sharing it said the connection was unidentified.
I am running Windows 7 RC so I did the diagnostic test and it said that the "Local Area Connection had no valid IP configuration". After ages of resetting the router innumerable times/trying various google searches/trying different ethernet cables/crying, I checked the IP config in CMD and found that there was no entry under Default Gateway.

So I checked the configuation on my sister's laptop, as for some reason it's wireless connection works fine, I did the whole cmd>ipconfig /all and entered the configuration into the wired desktop, but now it won't connect, it's still unidentified but now Windows Diagnostic can't find a problem at all.

Any ideas, it'd greatly be appreciated, thanks in advance.

you can't have the same config as the other PC as it'll cause an IP conflict...

try manually assigning it's own IP...and don't bother calling Sky as it's (obviously) a non supported OS...

It is a work-around not a fix, but you could try giving the desktop a manual address, open the LAN Properties, select' Use this IP address' and enter -
      IP address.....192.168.0.10
      Subnet.............255.255.255.0
      Gateway..........192.168.0.1

      Preferred server..208.67.222.222
      Secondary............208.67.220.220

Leave the Alternate Tab set at 'Obtain an IP automatically'.

Reboot the PC if it does not immediately connect.

Re: Wireless internet works, wired doesn't.

If you're not getting an assigned Gateway then you can't connect to the Internet even if you connect to the router. If you are connecting by LAN cable to the Sky router it should, as you expected, all happen automatically as the IP address should be assigned by DHCP. It obviously isn't working that way so you need to highlight the LAN adaptor in Windows 7 RC1 (I use the same release without any problem, so it's not the OS) and right click, select Properties and then TCP/IP at which point you again chose Properties and should see Automatic IP select by DHCP. If it isn't then click this and also make sure DNS is clicked. That should make it all connect automatically.

If it doesn't connect then go the the TCP/IP Properties and cancel Automatic DHCP and enter manually:

      IP 192.168.0.10
      Sub Mask 255.255.255.0
      Gateway 192.168.0.1

and try to connect. Then repost if you still have a problem (for example have you set Internet Sharing to ON? It should be OFF - can you connect if your sisters laptop is ON?)

Aren't there only a couple of enabled ports on the sky routers? There some that are for future use. Not future OS's though apparently.

      Thanks for the responses.
Tried entering those settings but still no luck. Windows Network Diagnostic scans and can not find a problem but it still won't connect.

Re: Wireless internet works, wired doesn't.

Is your adapter shown as OK in the Device Manager? Can you connect your sister's PC/LT by ethernet? If you can't then the router is probably faulty

Is the router auto uplink? If not are you using a crossover cable when you shouldn't be?

Re: Wireless internet works, wired doesn't.

      Don't know what that means.
The router is just the standard Sagem F@ST.

If this is a problem, when I go into the IP settings, automatically obtain DNS server option is not selectable.
