The router is just the standard Sagem F@ST.

If this is a problem, when I go into the IP settings, automatically obtain DNS server option is not selectable.
Auto uplink allows for crossover cables.
Are you talking about on your laptop? DNS option on XP only becomes available after IP is set to auto (or as its known DHCP).

The laptop isn't the issue, the laptop is wireless and works fine, I'm posting off of it now.

What I want to do is connect my desktop to the internet, which needs to be wired.

So same questions apply. Is the connection set to use auto for IP and DNS?

No, those were the options that I started off with and it didn't work, there was no default gateway. However the Automatic DNS option, it's greyed out.

Which does suggest the LAN cable might be the problem. You can have 2 types -

'Patch' which is the one you want where all the terminals are connected in order (ie 1 to 1, 2 to 2 and so on)

'Crossover' where some of the terminals are 'crossed (ie 1 to 4 and 4 to 1) and this won't work with your system. It's essentially for Peer to Peer networking where you connect two computers with a single cable between their LAN ports.

The best thing to do is turn off the laptop WiFi and try connecting it by the LAN cable using auto DHCP and auto DNS. That should work, if it doesn't it's the LAN cable or the Router. The lack of a Gateway suggest it's the cable if your laptop works as it's seeing the Gateway at 192.168.0.1 supplied by the router.

      Good luck!

I guess it's the router because the laptop gets the same problem with a wired connection.

Have you used the same cable for both machines. I think you are using a crossover cable when you should have a straight.

Yes I'd also make sure you have the correct type of LAN cable.
