      Hi

I am having a frustating problem trying to connect to ftp.

My web site hoster has confirmed all is well at their side.

I have configured router and avg to allow ports 20 & 21.

What else do I need to do?

I have had a connection but it was very short term and cannot get it back.

      HELP!!!!!!!!

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

James what FTP programme are you using. I Use Ipswitch Pro Secure and Managed File Transfer with WS_FTP and MOVEit

Normaly you do not have to change any port setting. Sorry if i am teachiing you to suck eggs. do you have the correct address ie ftp.yourhost.co.uk or ftp.ftp.yourhost.co.uk

Try downloading a trial version of the above and see if you can upload...

I assume you have AVG Internet Security and not the free AVG??

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

Did you uninstall an old Security software, like nortons, or mcafee. If so did you use the unistall tool from thier web site.

The easy way to see if you can connect, is disable the firwall on AVG and see if you can FTP,

The other option is to do complete clean uninstall of AVG. Try to connect and upload, once you have uploaded, re install avg,, and then re try to FTP. Avg firwall should pop a warning asking that a programe want to connect to the intarnet,...... this is where you click yes......... if you click no it blocks that programme from connecting.....

The other option is AVG Firewall allows you to add, edit or remove any of the predefined or newly created rules. This is a description of these actions.

      Creating a new rule
When a new application tries to establish a network connection, the Firewall ASK dialogue is usually displayed. The actions available in this dialogue are described in separate FAQ topic. However, in some cases the rule has to be created manually. This usually applies to applications which are using also some system communication, and a system rule has to be created for them based on the requirements provided by the author of such application.

To create a new application rule, please proceed as follows:

open AVG User Interface - menu Tools - Firewall settings
expand Profiles - your profile - Applications
click on "Add" to create blank application rule
fill in the details (application path, action)

To create a new system rule, please proceed as follows:

open AVG User Interface - menu Tools - Firewall settings
expand Profiles - your profile - System services
click on "Add" to create blank system rule
fill in the details (action, services)
please note that only "Allow" rules are taken into consideration in System rules. If you create a "Block" rule, the effect is the same as if the rule did not exist.
before creating new system rule, it is recommended to check the list of the existing rules and enable one or more of them by setitng them to "Allow", if suitable rules exists

      Editing or deleting current rule
In case you need to edit some rule, e.g. change its action from Block to Allow or delete it, you can do it the following way:

open AVG User Interface - menu Tools - Firewall settings
expand Profiles - your profile - Applications or System rules
click on the rule that you want to change
edit its settings or click "Delete this rule"

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

I haven't had any other security on this PC.

I have followed your instructions Re AVG and it was already set to allow all ftp so did not need changed. I did select log data on this so will see what that produces.

      I am using Wiseftp
      Error is

! Dialing to default dial-up connection...
! Successfully connected to default dial-up connection.

      ! <--- [ftp.premierdisco.co.uk] --->
      ! Connecting to ftp.premierdisco.co.uk ... (28/06/2009 08:55:10)
! Unable to connect: ftp.premierdisco.co.uk! (500 Permission denied (Winsock error #10013))
      /* Winsock Error #10013:
      WSAEACCES - Permission denied */

Ports 20 and 21 are forwarded on my router and AVG also shows them to be open.

I can get connected first thing in the morning when I boot the PC but it lasts only a few minutes before going down again. I am preparing web pages through the day and uploading them all in a 2 minute period at the start of the day. This does not help with the other things I need to do though.

I can send screen shots of Wiseftp, AVG, and my router page if that would help.

If there is anything else you feel would be of interest please let me know.

      Regards

      James Veal

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

And yes, I can connect to some ftp sites via the same ports. It seems that my site is one that I cannot connect to for some reason.

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

Is the a new site that you have set up, If you have not FTP to this site before, you may have to log into your site control panel and change the DNS to default name servers. Once you have done thsi you should be able to connect

Forget the above just checked you site, it is live...... Have you tried going into your control panel and setting up another FTP account log in user name

I don't know if it will help, but you could try downloading and running Download WinSockFix 1.1.0.13 - WinSockFix - A free Winsock/Tcp repair utility - Softpedia It may not fix your problem, but it will do no harm if it doesn't.

      Re: Cannot connect to ftp

I followed the instructions of Isitme and so far it seems to have resolved the situation. I have had a good connection for 10 minutes now, longer than I have had in a few days, and have transferred quite a lot of data.

      Fingers crossed!!!!

I will continue to test this for a while and post back what happens.

Thanks Isitme it is unbelievable that a simple solution like that took so long to find.

Also thanks to you other guys for your help. I have learned a lot in the past few days, down to you guys......respect!!
