The line is rather noisy, although i had been getting more than adequate speeds with such noise.
What speed were you getting, your line should support 8-10 Mb. Get the noise sorted and you will see a big difference.

Make sure you check from the Test socket, internal wiring can cause a lot of noise. If this is the case you will be charged by BT.

I can't remember the connection speeds but downloads would perform at around 700kb/s

Talk Talk provide our phone line so i will try to contact them today.

I phoned the Broadband team last night but as the account is in my father's name he has set the password and it wasn't any of the usual terms we use, and I know that he will have no idea what it is since he doesn't use the internet but only set up the account in his name as the sky tv was already his account. So i have had to resort to emailing again.

Also, I connected through the test socket but found no difference in the speed.

The line is quite noisy and such noise does mostly disappear when i turn off the router.

You may not see any speed difference if your line is capped, what you will see if a rise in the Noise Margin. Can you try the Test socket and post the stats please.

You either have a faulty filter, faulty router or an external line fault.

Unplug everything and just plug a cordrd phone into the test socket, press one number and listen, if you hear anything other than a faint hum then you have an external line fault and need to contact whoever you pay line rental to, hopefully BT and report a voice fault, do not mention BB.

You will get nowhere with your problem sending emails back and forth. Get your dad to try to log in to his account, then click the forgotten password link. You will be sent a new one. Go to this page -
      Sky.com - Sky Help Centre

Click the forgotten username/password link under Common Questions this will take you through the procedure. When you have obtained the info phone about your problem.

would the password over the phone be the same as the password used to access the account on sky.com?

I tried this password and the team member told me it was incorrect.

I am not sure, when I have called Support for anything I have not been asked for a password, it may be something new they have started. Maybe one of the Skyguys could comment?

Re: Drastic speed drops on Max package despite no setup change

Sorry for reviving such an old thread but thought it'd be better to keep my continuing problem alongside its original history.

So after just leaving it for a few months (hours on the customer support line caused me to lose any hope for the problem) I finally called back up and today had a BT engineer out to my house. He said there were no problems at the exchange and then proceeded to fit a filtered faceplate before leaving. It ran at about 7mb for 10 minutes after his departure then the router dropped out and restarted back at 500kb.

      Current stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1822 kbps 639 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 22.8 db
Noise Margin 1.4 db 3.5 db
