      Speed has dropped BIG TIME

Over the past 2 weeks my speeds have dropped drastically. My normal speeds were

      400kb/s down
      70-80kb/s up

About 2 weeks ago my down speed dropped to around 320kb/s and often times even less but what really has got me was since last night I noticed my up speed is down to around 35kb/s. The down speed I can put up with but I need my up speed.

Nothing new in the house has happened. I've changed the filters 3 times just to be sure and I am not connected directly to the test socket to ensure optimal results. I've rebooted my router time and time again and have veen tried that tcp optimiser crap with no luck.

I'm not sure what details you people need or how I can obtain them but here's some

      System Up Time: 0:40:48
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 975 723 0 618 742 0:00:49
      LAN 15 0 0 0 0 0:40:48
      WLAN 139874 99353 0 952 702 0:40:23

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3776 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 14.0 db

These speeds aren't correct though as per my speed test. Also I have tried other speed test and have tried downloading/uploading to make sure the test weren't right. Also I've tried using wireless and wired connections with no difference.

If I still have this problem by tonight I plan on calling sky however I don't know much about this stuff and I'd like to at least be able to tell them in detail what I need/want without them brushing me off with some useless jargon that I don't currently understand.

Oh and I'm using the Sagem router.
I'm at the Wickford exchange and am 3.1km away.
Thank you so much sky user Gods =)

I am not sure what you mean by this as connecting to the Test socket will give you the best result. Plug your router in there and post your result.

Used properly, TCPOptimiser is certainly not crap. It will not improve the routers connection speed to the exchange, which seems to be your problem. You have noise on your line which is holding your speed back. You should sync at 5-6Mb with a good line.

Yes I am connected to the test socket and those are my stats based on that. Stupid typos.

I was told once before that the max my line can handle is 4mb.

The noise is no different than it was a few months ago though. I'm wondering if Sky has capped me or there is some other reason why my speeds have dropped.

Re: Speed has dropped BIG TIME

If you are capped, it is very lightly as you are less than 1 db over the default noise margin of 6.9dbs. This means your line is getting as much as it can handle. Unless there is a fault in your external line, which is always difficult to prove, you are not going to get much more. When your line is moved to ADSL2+, you may get slightly more, but then again, you may be worse off. Sky seem to be moving all lines to this, so you could possibly have a word with them and see if they will try it on your line.

Is your voice line clear, or do you have noise when you use the phone?

Perfectly clear. I don't actually have a phone plugged in but I did to test it. Also my Sky box isn't plugged in either as I have it connected through the dish. I did this when I first got Sky to ensure no problems with my connection which I rely on.

I hear ya about the capping but I just don't understand why everything was working relatively fine and then bam, this.

Re: Speed has dropped BIG TIME

I just did another test because it's been quite a few hours.

      System Up Time: 0:05:23

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 4273 7137 0 0 0 0:04:19
      LAN 20 0 0 0 0 0:05:23
      WLAN 7857 4928 0 0 0 0:04:55
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3808 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 14.0 db
      Poll Interval: (secs)

I tried a test at Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and the results were
      3.28mb down
      0.04mb up

I would have posted a direct link but it gave me an error because the up speed kept fluctuating between 0.001 and 0.004

No this is not a joke...

I think you are slightly mistaken about your speed test results. Are you sure that you are getting 400k*b*/s down as if you meant 400k*B*/s down then that is around 3200kb/s which is about right for your sync speed, the same for your upstream.

Re: Speed has dropped BIG TIME

Nope not mistaken. 768 should give me 70-80kb/s NOT 0. I'm assuming you didn't read anything that was said.

Re: Speed has dropped BIG TIME

There is nothing wrong with your download speed compared to your sync speed. Normally the download will be about 85%-90% of the sync, due to overheads. As I mentioned earlier your main problem is with your sync speed, which seems to be down to your outside line, which is beyond yours and Sky's control. Only your phone rental provider can improve that and unless you have voice-line problems they are unlikely to do anything about it.

Probably a glitch in the Test caused the poor upload speed. I always recommend using http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/ not as fancy but much more consistent.

Re: Speed has dropped BIG TIME

Obviously BT is supplying the line however I don't have a contract with BT. I get my phone line through Sky so shouldn't they be able to do something?
