Router disconnects from net when using P2P

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help as I've had no luck with Sky technical support. In a nutshell, whenever I use P2P (uTorrent) my Sagem router disconnects from the net. I have to reboot the router to get back online. I am a Sky Broadband Max customer.

I spoke to Sky about this, asking if they have a mechanism in place to disconnect P2P users, and they assure me that they do not. They said my router cannot handle the speed of P2P. This is nonsense. I can happily download via http at speeds up to 2Mb/s. With P2P my router disconnects regardless of download speed (which rarely gets above 300kbps).

Do I need a new router? Is there anything I can try?

      Any help gratefully received

      Cheers

Are you restricting how many connections the P2P tool is making? It could just be that it is overloading the router with the number of connections coming onto your IP.

Thanks for your reply, Paul. I've lowered the Global Maximum Number Of Connections to 100, but just had a disconnect. I'll have a play with this setting and see if things improve.

      Cheers

Is the router dropping the ADSL connection or is it dropping the wireless connection?

Re: Router disconnects from net when using P2P

It's dropping the ADSL connection. I have lowered my global connections to 60 now, and limited simultaneous downloads to 1, and I haven't had a drop since. So I guess this is where the problem lies.

Not sure if a different router would solve this problem?

When I was with BT, with the Home Hub, I never had such problems.

      Cheers

Re: Router disconnects from net when using P2P

If your line is prone to generating errors then it could be the router is unable to keep up with error correction and retransmissions, which leads to a connection drop.

A different/better router may well help e.g. the old Sky Netgear which has a better cpu and possibly better firmware than your Sagem.

Or you could sort your line out (if that's the problem that is).

Re: Router disconnects from net when using P2P

Thanks for the suggestions. I never had problems when with BT, so I doubt it's my line. I may try and figure out how to 'unlock' my BT Home Hub for use with Sky,

      cheers again

BT use a different system that is less fussy about line conditions. Just because it was ok with BT does not mean there were no issues.

Re: Router disconnects from net when using P2P

I've got a similar issue using the old netgear router. When i'm using P2P after a hour or so web pages start to take ages to load, some get a DNS error (the download speed on uTorrent is no where near the maximum for my line)

After a period of time nothing works and i cant connect to the router via the IP so i have to disconnect power to get the connection back.

      any ideas where to start?

On utorrent to go "options" then select "speed guide", now in the window that pops up that you can auto configure utorrent to your line speed (I selected 10 meg/sec profile as I get close to that anyways)

I found that helped a lot with utorrent and I got a lot better experience with it.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!
