      I have to agree with IANTE, if the wireless in the router was turned off, the laptop would not see it. I'm afraid the OP reported the symptoms wrongly.

      "Got it sorted now. Called sky and after an half hour phone call its all good now. Can't really remember what the problem was. All I know is I had to go onto the router setting and enable wifi connection (not sure how it turned off) then reset the whole thing and tada! it works

      yes, and the OPs first post is redundant as he said he was connected to the router via WiFi - meaning it was turned ON...
