      sync speed - really slow

      Hi,

i have moved over to sky from tiscali on the 29th of may 2009

my stats with tiscali were: 2.9mb down over 800 up , iam 2 miles from the exchange - on 8mb service

i have now gone onto sky 16mb package as my exchange is llu, 21cn and adsl2+ enabled i assumed i would get a much greater download speed

i have checked my line info at BT Broadband which claims i can get 3.5mb and above on adsl2+

and 3mb or greater on a adsl max service

now i know iam still in the 10 day testing period, here is my issue:

      29th, 30th , 31st sync 3.6mb down 512 up

      1st june - 2046 down 652 up

      today (2nd june) 1532 down - 682 up

why is my connection getting slower ? iam now well below my old tiscali speed, i have phoned sky and apparently my line only supports 512 download speeds lol, how can that be the case when the bt wholesale site which iam sure is more accurate then skys checker says the speeds that were virtually what i was getting my tiscali ?

i have phoned sky's technical dept and there not interested what so ever

my sync speeds are getting slower by the day, iam worried ile be left with a line speed that is near 512 if it keeps dropping 1/2 a meg a day lol

my router is plugged into the test socket on the main box, no extensions used i have changed the filter, i have tried my old v1 netgear router aswell as this black sagem ive been sent and the speeds are the same

my old netgear wont even telnet on what ever service ive been put on the speed doesnt change at all when i change the noise db

do you think my speed will go back to the 3.5 mb it was on the 29th and 30th ?

      what should i do ?

      line stats from sagem router:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1535 kbps 593 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.5 db 32.5 db
Noise Margin 9.7 db 10.5 db

You need to stop messing about with it

You have only just connected so will be running through the DLM training period, if you keep disconnecting the router it will see this as a fault and reduce the speed to make it more stable.

DLM runs for around 10 days and will slowly increase the speed until it reaches it's maximum stable speed.

      ok....

i feel abit of a fool now to be honest as ive just read up on dlm and how it works, i guess ive caused the issue my self as ive been re-booting my router every morning since the move over to sky (as per a friends instruction) iam guessing from what ive read this would make the dlm think my line cant support the speed and drop my sync speed on my line.

will the sync speed come back up do you think ?

It may not now. You'll just have to wait until DLM is finished and if it hasn't contact Sky to try and get CST to manually set your connection speed higher.

Re: sync speed - really slow

If DLM is working correctly, the sync speed should return to it's maximum over the next rew days.

Turning off the router once or twice a day should not cause any issues, doing it a few times in the space of an hour may.

Let DLM run it's course and then if needed Sky can manually set the speed.

Post your router stats later on tonight and in the morning and let's see if anything is happening.

BTW, your friend was nearly right, if you were on the BT ADSL Max package you can reset the router every morning (it is recommended by some ISP's) but it is different on Sky's equipment so don't give him too much grief.

Re: sync speed - really slow

      thanks for your help,

ive just spoken to sky technical about it, and they have ran some line tests and say that my line should be recieving between 8 and 16 meg on adsl2+ which is way more then ive been told or found...

they seem to believe there may well be a fault somewhere but have advised me to wait untill the dlm period is over and then give them a call and if they need to they will escolate it to bt

they also said the same as smithy about the router doing what iam doing ie rebooting it daily shouldnt cause any speed issues

ile post the router stats tonight

      cheers

Re: sync speed - really slow

With your attenuation you will never get 8-16mb even on ADSL2.

The best you could hope for is 5-6mb with a good line.

If you were able to get 8-16Mb on a 56.5 attenuation there would be a lot of happy bunnies around

Your line may have to be moved back to G.DMT, which it would be on when you were first connected. ADSL2+ does not work well on some lines and yours may be one of them. Only time will tell, so you will just have to wait it out until the DLM training finishes.
