      Noise v Attenuation....

      Prob a daft question this...

I presume my attenuation, is fixed, ie dictated by line length?

      So, with stats like these:

      Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6973 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 26 db
Noise Margin 7 db 15 db

from the (hard wired) extension in the office

      and:

      Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8012 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 45 db 26 db
Noise Margin 7 db 15 db

From the test socket, I take it there's nothing really to be done to increase my speed?

BTW my line is currently capped @ 8mb, although ADSL checker suggested it would only do 2mb...

      Re: Noise v Attenuation....

Sorry, reposted, however, I now seem to be syncing at my capped speed, this is the FIRST time I have seen 8mb since connection....

      Normally get 6-7 steady....

      Hmm...

Now the line noise seems to be the same, just a 1db difference in attenuation, although the internalcabling in the house is new (new house) is is quite long, and the point the router is normally plugged into is on the 3rd floor, so prob a good 30m of cable between test socket and office...

There is a big improvement on speed from the test socket.
I would recommend a filtered faceplate to get test socket results on your extension, try this one it is the one that i use also.

      ADSL Nation LTD.

      Hope this helps.

Your connection at the test socket is considerably better, but remember if you fit a filtered faceplate, you have to plug the router into it. Your other extensions become incapable of receiving broadband. You would have to use a cable to connect it or use a Homeplug system to network your house.

EDIT - Just seen your last post, you will not get more than you have, so for stability's sake you would be better leaving the cap in place, if it is capped. You may be syncing at the maximum at the moment. The less Sky fiddle with it the better.

Lol on the phone now, getting them to remove the 8mb cap If it won't go any hgher reliably, then I'll have it put back on - Will prob get a filtered faceplate, and move the router to near to the master socket, only the main PC is connected via ethernet, so will prob just use the homeplugs to connect that - all the rest of the Lappys etc are wireless...

Ok, as we thought, 8mb is the limit imposed by the attenuation, tried a 10mb cap, just sync'd at 8mb again, but I'm happy if it's stable....

With the filter faceplate fitted, it should be just fine.
With the filtered faceplate i have, my noise margin goes down to 4db at night and still works perfectly without any slowdown at all.

Hmm, after getting off the phone to them...

Now gone to these stats - noise has gone WAY up, I haven't altered a thing...

      Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5536 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 43 db 25 db
Noise Margin 14 db 13 db

Please don't tell me they've put DLM back on....
