      could I get better?

sorry I posted this in the cabling and faceplate forum by mistake to start with - mods please feel free to go and delete the other thread...

anyways, I've just installed my XTE2005 faceplate from runitdirect

first off big ups to them for excellent service, ordered yesterday afternoon and arrived this morning

Previously I've been having some dropouts in my connection that seem largely related to picking up my DECT phone...connection doesn't drop consistently though

on a good day my downstream noise margin has been 9db, but is usually much lower - dropping below 5db I tend to lose the connection until the noise margin creeps up again

So anyway, right now after installing the faceplate I'm seeing a rock steady 14db noise margin which is better then I ever have seen before

My syncspeed however has not changed - which was exepcted.

I was on the phone to a sky engineer sometime last year to get my MAX DELAYS reduced and he moved me from G.gdmt to ADSL2 to see if my line would cope. it was in the end left as ADSL2 and my understanding is they capped the download speed to what my router stats are currently showing

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 803 903 0 769 2354 00:05:05
      LAN 100M/Full 1599 1380 0 2908 873 00:06:18
      WLAN 11M/54M 37 43 0 13 10 00:06:06
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3744 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 31 db
Noise Margin 14 db 14 db

I'm a fair way from the excahnge, but do you think there would be any benefit from calling sky and asking them to remove the cap now that noise margin is so much better. What downstream could I expect? Also as you can see my upstream connection is also capped as I am on the max package.

      any thoughts and opinions appreciated

and if you do think its worth calling sky some idea of what I might say to them would be nice

      thanks in advance
      sc

oops! sorry I really messed that up didnt I?!

I think you must have replied while I was trying to repost it....

anyways this is what isitme said (thanks )

Just call them and tell them your line has been capped due to poor wiring, you have now improved the wiring and would like the cap lifted. Should the first agent tell you you are getting as much as you can ask to be put through to CST. If they refuse, hang up and try again. Tier 1 are sometimes difficult to deal with. If your external wiring is OK you should get around 6Mb/s.

      Re: could I get better?

well just got off the phone with CST

first line tech support was a bit rubbish as normal, but much better when I got on to CST

they raised the cap on my upstream straight away

they took a little convincing about the downstream as they said slower and stable was theie preference over higher downstream with errors

....but I asked them to try it anyway and they monitored it whilst I streamed some video and surfed a bit. there was no build up of errors so they left it for now. Hopefully I won;t see any issues but just need to keep an eye on it for a couple of days I guess and see what happens

here are my current stats, considering the distance from exchange if I can keep it at this I will be a happy camper. that upstream will help me on COD4 too
