      Botnet problem

I have Sky Broadband at home and got a letter the other day saying that the internet had been cut off because my computer had become part of a botnet and I cannot get re-connected until the computer is reformatted.

I've had this problem once before and had to pay to get someone round to reformat the computer as I couldn't find the backup discs to do it myself. As the internet is cut off I can't download any programs that may be able to get rid of the spyware, so I'm assuming reformatting is the only option. How do I go about fixing this? I'm a bit clueless.

I have no idea why it has happened again as I have AVG but it doesn't seem to be enough. What else can I do to prevent it from happening again? Thanks for any help!

      Reformat hard drive under XP?

To avoid this sort of thing happening again i would advise getting a decent Firewall like Zone Alarm (turning off windows firewall at the same time.) and also Spybot Search & Destroy. ( Newer and better anti malware tools are probably available. )

Buy a decent antivirus and firewall. Eset Smart Security 4 or Kaspersky Internet Security.

Eset is the better of the two.

I would also recommend Spyware Doctor, very good Spyware utility.

Or for an all round security package, I use Norton Internet Security 2009 along with Spyware Doctor, works very well...
