      Problems With Sky Connect

hi i've been on the sky connect package for a year and a half now and in the last few months i've started having more and more problems. I am the primary user of the connection as my parents use it for no more then a little browsing every day. I use the connection primarily for gaming, problems started a few months back where every so often the download speed would be so bad (less then 1MB/s) i've been unable to play games that night. However its become even more frequently lately where the only time i find myself able to play online is between midnight and noon. i use wired not wireless. All required ports for my game are open. basically i've checked everything my end and it clearly my connection beign throttled.

As its my parents connection and it meets their browsing needs they refuse to change ISP. They've said i'm welcome to get my own seperate connection but as theres no LLU at all in my exchange my only other option would be virgin which the refuse to let me get because of holes being drilled in the wall.

I seem to be pretty screwed really but i figued i'd ask to see if theres anything else you might be able to come up with.

      Usual download speed: 5MB/s
      Throttled speed: > 1MB/s

Its a problem with the connect package I'm afraid an unless you move theres not much that can be done about it. Having said that I'm sure there are other non llu providers who cater for gamers. Be aware that this will require a second phone line if your parents are keeping their sky connection ( more holes )

Hello Bonno, i myself like alot of other people suffered this problem, i found myself with only 1 option and that was to migrate to a new provider, am sorry to say your now in this boat, Sky have begun Traffic Management, which is basically your limited after 5pm.. tuff!

(Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users
      Steve's Sky Connect speedtest blog

This will provide you any information on the Connect package, i would suggest possibly explaining to your parents the results of the BT speed test if you do it after 5pm, as your speed you should get and reported will be completely out! (As in steves blog)

But his parents are happy with Connect...it serves their purpose...

By all means try and convince them to move, but if they're happy with the product why should they move?...

      Re: Problems With Sky Connect

Because his parents arnt the ones on this board posting complaints, by all means if there happy they can stick with sky.. am not telling his parents otherwise, however they did not ask the question and therefore my answer is related to the User who posted his query with regards to his broadband needs! convincing his parents otherwise is a possible solution to his problem!

Yeah my parents are not interested in te slightest in cancelling their broadband.

Not being in a LLU area i'm likely to get throttled wherever i go

Not necesseraly, the problem is Sky wont pay for additional bandwidth from BT. This wont be the case with every other non llu isp, or more accurately may not be as an acute a problem. As you say they probably all traffic shape to a degree, unfortunatelly Sky's is quite severe because of their reluctance to pay for extra bandwidth.

Newnet, IDnet, and a few others dont Traffic manage, Entanet do but not to the extent BT rebadged products do, theres is only active on 90% total capacity of the interconnects, which isnt to bad, currently mine (Edinburgh - even tho am in Northern Ireland) is only at 81% capacity, thats the highest its been tonight, so iv had no traffic management
