Next thing to check is if you have any applications using the net in the background. The easiest way to do this is to close down all your browsers and email clients, then open a Command Prompt and type netstat /b The only thing you should see is possibly your security software update connections, anything else needs investigation. If nothing is shown, start browsing again for 5 mins then do it again, identify everything that is running.

Definately no other apps - I tested with just the router, test socket and a laptop on a patch cable and I can get 5.8Mbps - which is close enough to the 6.5 for my tastes...

      Now I have to either

      a) jump through the hoops with Sky BB Support to get BT to reset the line to 8Mbps (when I should get 7+ in real download speed?)

      or

      b) just ask for a Max upgrade (I reckon I blow my 40Gb allowance most of the time but they've not complained YET - would be nice not to have to worry about it tho

If they quibble about b) then I goto O2

Thanks for the tips - I've already gone from 450kb to 680k downloads - that's a good enough improvement in itself

If you feel you need the unlimited download then go for Max. All being well you should get 16Mbs. I would first try to get the maximum sync on the connection you have. If they can't give you this, then I don't see how it will improve with Max. If they stone-wall you, O2 if probably a good move provided they have enabled your exchange.

Neighbour has 18Gb O2 connection so I should be OK

I'd settle for a solid 8 tho - it's just Sky Internet support insist on making me run a ****load of tests before they'll escalate my issue to 2nd-line support - who can request the line be 'reprofiled' or whatever it is they do to return it to 8Gb.

I'm afraid there is no other way to get to CST other than running the seemingly useless tests required by Tier 1. They have a job to do and regulations to follow. If they put everyone through to CST without checking, they would not keep their job very long.
