      Whats a test socket?

I connected the small dsl cable that came with the sky box into the socket and still get the same attenuation readings. I can assure that I am roughly 1.33 km from the exchange as the crow flies so don't tell me I am wrong.
I am thinking maybe the internal wiring in the house could be a problem but no way of knowing for sure

      Classic.

Where can I find a test for the reliable distance to my exchange?

Maybe, but I'm going to put money on the fact that your phone line isn't strung out on a forest of poles screwed into God's green earth making a dead straight beeline from you to that exchange.

The problem is, your line will most likely take the road route and even more likely knowing BT, it'll go via the other side of town so it can pick up a crispy shredded beef and McFlurry on the way..

Try connecting to your test socket and also swapping filters, you'll find this behind the removable panel of your master socket. The master socket is the first one connected to the line where it enters your property.
