Really slow connection (day and night)

      Hi

I've been using the sky connect package for just over 2 years and never really had a problem with the connection, however that past couple of weeks I've noticed some dramatic slow downs both day and night.

I'm not sure if the problems are related to the other threads relating to throttling.

Below are my line stats and I'm a bit concerned about the SNR, its seems quite low to me, and I was wondering if that is related to the problem.

      Down
      Connection Speed: 8128 kbps
      Line Attenuation: 13.0 db
      Noise Margin 6.4 db

      Up
      Connection Speed 448 kbps
      Line Attenuation 10.0 db
      Noise Margin 29.0 db

Take a look at my sig for my last speed test. I live quite close to the exchange so the speed I am getting is really bad, I usually average about 6mB.

I've tried all the usual stuff, connecting the router to the master socket disconnecting all other devices, but nothing improves the situation.

Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Is this all the time or during peak times? If it is peak time have a look at this - (Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users

Use the link there to do an official BT Performance test and post the results here.

Re: Really slow connection (day and night)

HI I've performed stage 1 of the speed test and the results I got were:

      Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 45 kbps

However the next test they want me to perform requires me to change the username within the router, but how do I do this on the sky router? I dont think it is possible is it?

      Cheers

Re: Really slow connection (day and night)

      Hi

Yes I am, I have two PC's one is on wireless (which I used last night to do the tests), and the other is wired (this is the pc I used for the tests this morning).

I'll try running the tests again tonight on both machines, and see if they come back with the same results, however I have had slow internet on the wired PC previously.

      Cheers

No it is not possible. This test routes your connection direct through the BT servers to check whether the ISP is responsible for the slow down.

As IANTE says, do speed tests wired only, it is a waste of time using wireless as there are too many variables. When you get your speed up to what it should be with a wired connection, then you can think about the wireless problems.

The Performance test you did shows that your connection to the exchange could not be better. You should be able to achieve a download speed of 7150kbps, which is the maximum possible on Connect. This will not be possible during peak times when your connection will be throttled. If you can do a wired Performance test before 5 pm or after 12 am, this will show what your connection is really capable of. For other speed tests, please don't waste your time using Speedtest.net. It is probably the most unreliable tester on the net. Use the Skyuser tester at Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester
