      Strange goings on....

      Right,

Thanks to the very helpful people on here (Stabby, Smithy, Isitme etc) my broadband speeds are much better, some would say like lightening in fact!! However I still have a minor niggle. Every so often, say once every 5 minutes, I get absolutely no download speed, almost like a disconnection. If I'm trying to web browse, I get a 20 second delay, then it kicks back in at 100Mph. If I'm downloading torrents, the speed on the downloads gradually reduces to zero across the board and then fires back up (I'd expect speed fluctuations obviously, but not a drop to zero), and last night on Skype, the call I was on suddenly dropped out and I had to redial. The problem is the same on wireless and on wired connection.

These were the last stats I posted (I'm at work now) but they haven't changed much, noise was about 9b down and 4db up last night, connection speed the same:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 68345 94251 0 88 546 45:09:20
      LAN 100M/Full 80239 29505 0 70 20 94:11:05
      WLAN 11M/54M 642071 452511 0 2310 442 84:07:04
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14342 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 16 db
Noise Margin 5 db 6 db

Can anyone suggest what might be happening??? Do I need a cap back on my line at a lower speed??

PS I've ordered some homeplugs to solve the upstairs wireless problem, so I've given up bridging routers!!

      Re: Strange goings on....

you shouldn't really have an upstream SNR that low - you usually always see them in the teens/twentys - so you might have a line issue somewhere...

I noticed my stats are very similar to yours so there's more evidence you have a line issue. :-)

When you say line issue, is that internal or at Sky's end?? What should I do next?

      Re: Strange goings on....

test socket is first port of call, and see what happens to the SNRs...chances are it's your end (noisy lines are almost 100% customer end)...

      Re: Strange goings on....

I've not got a test socket - I rewired the junction box coming in as per Smithy & Isitme's suggestions to improve my noise stats and emailed Sky to increase my speed which they did (though another forum member had already had a play from Sky's end)

I'm not bothered about sacrificing a bit of speed if the line stablilises.

      Are you using wireless???

If so it could be the Vista bug where it searched for other networks which delays what you are doing.

Is there a fix if it is?? I'm sure it's the same if wired though!!

      Re: Strange goings on....

I think your line may be trying to suck down too much. Very often a slightly lower connection speed will give you a better download speed. What you can try is wait till the line is noisy, about 6 pm, and switch the power to your router off for a minute then switch on again. You should resync with the exchange at a slightly lower speed, with a good noise margin, which hopefully will give you a more stable speed.

Right, I've done that, and strangely enough I'm syncing at a higher speed, yet it seems more stable!!??
