      Another slow speed problem

When I signed up for the MAX product I was told I'd be able to get up to 8mb which I thought was optomistic as I was only getting 6.5mb with BT. I've been connected now for about three months and have struggled to get above 3.5mb, sometimes the speed has been down as low as 1.5mb. It doesn't matter what time the day it is my download speeds are still on average 2/3 slower than they were with BT.

I've tried the usual troubleshooting tips and my router is currently plugged into the master socket and has been for a while but this hasn't made a difference.

I've spoke to SKY and they say they can't find any problems and that there system shows I should be getting about 7mb.

The statistics of my router are:

Connection Speed 7136 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 24.5 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 18.0 db

      Any help would be appreciated

      Re: Another slow speed problem

you're in sync @ 7Mbps so the issue is throughput - are you using wireless?

      Re: Another slow speed problem

Where are you gauging the speed?

Click the speed test link on my sig, try the large file via ethernet and let us know how fast your transfer rate is (it'll be in KB/sec if using IE)

      Re: Another slow speed problem

I've been gauging it from just doing downloads from microsoft.com and downloads from the technet subscription site. Previously on BT i've always got between 550 - 650kbps downloads now I only get between 180 - 250kbps, 300kpbs if I'm really lucky .

I used that site earlier and got these results:

      Re: Another slow speed problem

Sorry completely missed the links at the bottom!! Tried the 3 links on the site and got between 250 - 325kbps, 325kpbs was the peak and then it moved between 250 and and 300kpbs after that.

Incidently I was downloading from Microsoft today whilst at work and was still getting about 600kpbs.

      Re: Another slow speed problem

If you are not using Vista try TCPOptimiser from the link below. Set the speed to 8000 and take the automatic option. This can have a great effect on your speed.

If you are using Vista you could try the Vista tweak, which is a bit further down the page. This produces a .cmd file. Save it to your desktop and double click it to start the process. You might have to rename it by removing the .txt from the end if it saves as a text file. To be honest I found it made very little difference.
