There is nothing to stop you using the Test socket, except when the face is off your extensions will not work, or at least they shouldn't. It is sometimes possible to plug the faceplate back into the filter, which does the same as a filtered faceplate and will allow your extensions to operate.

Fitting a filtered faceplate is very easy, it is simply a matter of taking the wires off the existing faceplate and putting then back on the same terminals on the new one. Full instructions are given with the plate. XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation you need a tool to refit the wires but these can be picked up for a few pence at stores like B&Q.

Would I still need filters in all the other phone sockets running off the master, or does it filter all the extensions running from the master socket?

Once yu have fitted the filtered faceplate no other socket will receiver broadband except the filtered one as they will all be isolated from it.

You don't need any filters on the other sockets from that point on, the new faceplate has one built in.
