Unhappy Sky connection is slow all of sudden

I have Sky Mid started from 2nd April (was using Max, rang Sky Customer Service for moving home end of March, but the Sky Customer Service only moved the Sky TV, so we started new order with Mid) Back to the point, sorry, the download speed had been ok although is just 2.5Mb max for a family of two who are MMORPG gamers, watch a few video clips from time to time and we are not fans of downloading movies.

We have a "honeymoon" for three weeks when since last Sunday, the speed has become "crawling". I know that I have to carry out a few tests and post my stats here, then only you can advise, but it took me 15 minutes to finish the following test!
      It is very annoying.

You will get the router stats instantly, no downloading required and they will indicate you line quality.

Also post how you are connected to the router, wireless or via a lead etc, how many phone extensions you have and the master socket type (does it have a test socket).

Re: Sky connection is slow all of sudden

Log into the router, and give us the stats

(192.168.0.1 usually User = Admin and Password = sky)

Is the router on an extension or master?

      Have you any Extensions?

Plus it into the Test socket and run the test again, plus get the stats from that and post them here..

Also as smithy suggests is it wireless or wired? (try the wire if your wireless)

Here is the stats from the router:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 267 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.5 db 37.8 db
Noise Margin 19.7 db 13.5 db

I have 1 wired PC and 1 laptop using wireless. The stats are identical from both PC and laptop. Router is on extension, 5m phone line that we bought from Homebase I am going to do Test socket in a short while.

      Thanks for the replies!

P/S: I tried sppedtester.bt.com, entered phone number and clicked Go. The status bar shows Checking User Details for a minute or so, then tell me Test Error - The system is currently busy. Blah blah blah.
No idea why the system is busy as I am not on the phone.

The connection looks heavily capped, the stats from the test socket are now quite important as it may show an error in the internal wiring that has caused the cap.

You should be getting much better speeds so hopefully a soloution should not be too hard. You could really do with running the router from the master socket and using an ethernet cable to go to the PC instead of running an extension lead.

Hopefully your stats improve threw the master socket, if this is the case i would suggest leaveing the router there meantime and contact sky to remove the cap, and then we can suggest the best course of action regarding your internal wireing

Re: Sky connection is slow all of sudden

Here is the stats when router is plugged in directly to the master socket:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 766 kbps 409 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.0 db 37.6 db
Noise Margin 11.0 db 14.5 db

Space reserved for the test socket...
Unscrewed the master socket but I was unable to plug in the microfilter to the test socket, blocked by the cover, and I dared not pull it too hard. I think I will give up the test socket.

      Got it work finally:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 767 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.5 db 37.5 db
Noise Margin 18.1 db 11.0 db

Re: Sky connection is slow all of sudden

When the router is on the master socket, my feeling of the speed is about the same as the past 3 weeks. Do you think I am still capped and should call Sky to remove the cap?

If the cap is removed I would like to put the router back to the extension (my acceptance level is as low as no interruption felt when I watch video clips on Youtube) because the master socket is at the other end of the diagonal line from the computer desk. Wiring is a bit of a pain.

There seems to be alot of noise in that line, probably cause the cap in the first place, i would call sky and have them remove the cap but, your extension is not a great idea!
