You internal wiring is causing an issue but not big enough to be capped as you are.

I would recommend replacing the master socket faceplate with a filtered one and running the router from there with homeplugs if you cannot do the cables easily or if you must run a ADSL only socket to the PC.

This will give you the best stats that you can get and also the best speeds. If you really arn't that bothered then you could remove any wiring at the rear of the master socket faceplate this is in any terminal except 2 & 5, terminal 3 is the ring wire and is not needed but causes noise on the line.

Then ring Sky and see if you can get to CST, after 10:30pm may be your best bet.

Re: Sky connection is slow all of sudden

At the moment, I plug the router to the master socket. I checked my Sky account and found out the connection details:

      Your connection details
Line connection testing completed on 11/04/2009
      Download Speed
Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to
      0.8Mb (768Kb)
      Upload Speed
Your connection has been set to an upload speed of up to
      0.4Mb (416Kb)

I rang Sky support to remove the cap, but the man over the phone explained the cap was because the system has detected that is the max speed that I can afford. He also suggested me to replace the microfilter instead and then ring them back for further troubleshooting. I am going to get a new microfilter this afternoon.

P/S: But how would I know if the new microfilter works if the speed cap is always 768kbps?

dont waste your time on a new filter

XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation

Order one of these, fit it and your figures should improve, however that muppet at sky should be able to retest your line and increase the cap, phone after 10:30pm and you wont have to deal with the Hokey Kokey Hotline!

Re: Sky connection is slow all of sudden

I am tempted to buy the XTE-2005, I read the installation guide it seems no way back - wires are cut from the master socket, if anything goes wrong I would have no connections at all We would like to go for virgin broadband after our contract with Sky finished next year, it is a pain to deal with Sky regarding other products (other than Sky TV).

For the Sky support, well, the man said it is "standard procedure" to require me to change the microfilter first before proceeding. Anyway, for the entire morning I have used all 3 microfilters I have for testing, I get the download speed range between 765-768kbps.

We did call Virgin to enquire before moving in the new house. There is a virgin socket or box outside our house and the previous owner was using virgin broadband. We checked there was virgin service available using the postal code, and thought it would be option, but virgin customer support told us there was no service. Absolutely awful. Sky also does not provide good enough service, broadband was not "moved" when we rang them to order house moving. Seems there are only rotten apple or rotten orange, no other choice.

I will call Sky support again tonight, finger crossed I can get the cap removed.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions given

I just rang Sky - was passed to another team after talking to the first level support. Then was put on hold for an hour...

Do you have a test socket? If so plug into there and call Sky tech support back up and ask to go through the troubleshoot for slow speed (unless this has been done already) so that CST can sort it out.

Your Noise margins have shot up fom 11! theirs alot of interference somewhere on that line, i would suggest that you remove any extension wiring and retry, it could be that the cable you got from homebase is causeing the problems, (same as my problem with cable i got from B&Q, had to replace it with Grade A stuff )
