      Unable to connect for days

      Hi everyone.

I haven't contacted sky about this yet as my dad pays for it and is really lax about getting in touch with them, so hopefully I'll be able to get some good advice on here...The problem we've been having - since January - is that our standard sky netgear router disconnects from the internet (no problem connecting pc to router) roughly every two weeks, and we're unable to get a connection again for another 5-10 days. When we do get a connection however, it works fine for two weeks.

We've had sky broadband max for about a year now, and all last year it worked fine.

It's an annoying problem as when it's working, I have no issues, so just wondering why it's unable to connect for such long periods and then suddenly, able to connect again?

Is it more likely a router issue, or line problem?

we've tried different microfilters and wires but nothing seems to work as when it doesn't want to connect it won't, and when it does, it does...

Could be a faulty router, next time it does it try a factory reset, hold in the little button at the back with a pen until the lights flash about 10 secs.

Re: Unable to connect for days

yeah, i've tried that too with no success.

it seems to help if we switch the router off for 24+ hours before trying again, but sometimes it still won't connect.

my dad tends to leave it on all the time, but it maintains connection for 2+ weeks without issue.

is your router plugged into the master socket at the moment? are there any extensions between the phone socket and your router?

Re: Unable to connect for days

Yeah, the router is plugged into the master socket. we have never changed the way it is hooked up.

Just wondering if something is damaged in the router as connecting to the internet seems to be the problem. When it is connected, we are able to maintain connection (without switching the router off) for long periods of time.

I've heard it's not advisable to leave it switched on for long periods, so maybe we have damaged certain components this way, but how it suddenly comes back on again and works without issue makes me wonder.

Re: Unable to connect for days

could be a fault with the router then, if it happens again give sky a call(better if your unable to get online when you phone) and see what they have to say.

before calling them you should connect your microfilter to your test socket if you have one to save some time(link below) and also make sure there are no extensions connected or devices in your phone line without a microfilter, you could also try changing the microfilters if you have any spares

I've heard it's not advisable to leave it switched on for long periods,
Routers are designed to run 24/7, switching them off and on too often can actually reduce their life.
