      re: download speed

I have just realized that Peergaurdian is a type of firewall. As Nod32 Smart also has a firewall this may be causing a conflict. I don't know if it was resolved but there were a lot of problems reported the PG and Vista. If you are able to connect better in Safe Mode this may confirm this.

      re: download speed

peergaurdian is a waste of time.

Do you think that Sky or Virgin or anyone that wants the info, wont be able to get it?

I used to use peerguardian and it messed up so many of my systems, ever since I have taken it off I have had no probems, except for my line going twice DLM in 3 weeks.

I have nod32 and find it great.

      re: download speed

Nod32 is an Anti-Virus program, PeerGuardian is an IP blocker, 2 totally different things.

PeerGuardian is not to stop your isp seeing what you are doing, but to stop such as film companies or music publishers from seeing who is downloading their products on P2P programs, that way they can and do get the users identity from the isp to prosecute. That is my understanding.

Nod32 Smart security is an all in security program which includes a firewall and anti-spyware functions as well as the AV. - Firewall, Antivirus, Antispam: ESET Smart Security Has It All

      Peergaurdian is basically a firewall.

      Re: download speed

      While not wanting to highjack this post I will add;

PeerGuardian is not a firewall, I would hate for someone to read the post and use it as such, below I have quoted the FAQ from their website

      "Can PeerGuardian replace my firewall?
No! PeerGuardian has been heavily optimized for what it needs to do and is not a replacement for your firewall."

The best firewall is the NAT on the router, with 'Ping' disabled. A software firewall then takes care of any outbound unwanted connections. I can recommend Home of Gibson Research Corporation and use 'Shields Up' to test your firewall.

canada16 spoke of Nod32 not 'Smart Security' perhaps I should have quoted.

OK rant over, we will have to agree to disagree Isitme

anyway guys, I have done so many things these past couple of days my head is spinning!
Have gone thro' it all with sky and so on! To cut a long story short, it was the firewall on eset smart security that decided to work itself!! To rectify, I did an un/reinstal of the whole thing and all seems good - for now-!! Will report back if need be, otherwise, thanks to you all for trying to help me, sky user at its best as always!

      Re: download speed

That's OK but PG is described in several places as a small firewall, in Softpedia it is, to quote -

Download PeerGuardian 2.0 RC1 Test 2 - A powerful yet petite firewall application especially designed for P2P users who want to protect their computers - Softpedia

I doubt if anyone would mistake a tool designed to protect illegal downloaders as a real firewall. The latest version is an RC many Vista users are having difficulty with

The OP. Kipper, mentions that he has Nod32 Smart Security, that is who my reply was aimed at. I think you will agree that this includes a robust firewall, which may be conflicting with PG.
As you say, we will agree to differ
