Yes I'm a bird, yes I'm blonde and yes I'm stuck!! Help!!!

      Really need some help!!!

My work laptop is set up to the proxy server in work and previously all I had to do was uncheck the box on my LAN settings in order to switch to going on sky wirelessly at home. However- my laptop had to get wiped as it was broken and since then it will not connect at home. The IT men at work say they can see no reason why it wouldn't and want to charge a small fortune to come out(not covered by work!)
      Here's what's going on....

(When i first got the laptop it wouldn't connect until the IT man at work did "something" to it but he doesn't know what!- then it worked fine!)

I know my router works fine as my Wii and X box connect fine

It comes up that I have an excellent signal from sky and that I am connected

When I open a web browser window (google) the page name comes up at the top and bottom but then a "This page cannot be displayed" message comes up with a box telling me to diagnose connection problems.

So when I do this it just says there may be a problem with my modem or router.

Someone said it might be my firewall settings?!

Anyway please help! I want my laptop again as my office is freezing and too much like work!!!

      Thanks, EM

      LOL at the title!

A couple of links below, depending on which operating system your using.

I don't know if you've set up the wireless connection since the machine was fixed or not, but they will guide you through all parts of the process.

Chances are it's something silly like the connection on the machine set to a different security type to the one your router uses etc.

As benly says its most likely a security setting out of place. Follow the guides and if still struggling, post back and we will try our best to help.

The old adage 'Connected to the WiFi doesn't necessarily also mean your connected to the Network' seems appropriate. If the WiFi is connected then the encryption seems OK. If you enter 192.168.0.1 in your browser do you connect to the Router set up page (User-name and Password are admin and sky)?

Re: Yes I'm a bird, yes I'm blonde and yes I'm stuck!! Help!!!

Can you connect OK using the ethernet cable?
What firewall are you running? Make sure it is configured to pass LAN traffic.
If you laptop was configured at work your IT guys may have given the wireless adapter a fixed IP address. Check this in the Properties of the Wireless adapter(TCP/IP). If they have, click the Alternate Configuration tab and put this in the 'User configured' boxes-

      192.168.0.10
      255.255.255.0
      192.168.0.1

      208.67.222.222
      208.67.220.220

      Reboot and try to connect.
As suggested it may be a security problem. You mention you have a Wii and these sometimes have difficulty with WPA so your router may be using WEP. Your laptop would have to be configured the same way. You can check if this is the problem by going into the Wireless settings of the router and selecting the Disable button under Security. If you can then connect, you know the problem.

Thanks guys! You'll be pleased to know I'm typing this wirelessly!!! I'm not quite sure how I did (think a glass or two of wine helped) but I tried a few of these things and all of a sudden it came on! So now I'm back to surfing on my sofa in comfort!!! xxxxx

Cool - good stuff, make sure you check your wireless security settings, so that no one else is sat on their sofas enjoying your connection
