New broadband, weird speeds and shut downs?

      Hey

I have had sky unlimted broadband since about the 19th march and have a few questions:

1, everything was fine at start and getting 11mb, then the next day it went downhill to like 4mb.

      2. is it true the broadband needs to train, and in like 10 or so days it gets better?

      3. last night i was getting speeds slower that dial-up, and like 19kbs and then it went down and then down and then shut off completly, and then lost my router, so had to go downstairs and turn everything off and re-boot, then on re-boot it was still slow at 2-4mb.

I was told from ask sam, bt and sky that I would get a min of 8-16mb connection as only 2km from exchange, and my neighbour gets 10mb as well.

Is there something I need to do, or just wait?

      Thanks guys and gals

Your line will be on DLM training and speeds are likely to fluctuate. If after 10 days it has not stabilized, post back including your stats, preferably from your normal position and from the Test socket.

In the mean time, leave your router plugged in at all times.

It sounds like you could be going through DLM, if it is then you should leave the router on for the 10 days until DLM has finished, but it can some times take longer.

Yeh never seen speeds like it.

1 second its 8mb then 19kbs then 2mb then 4mb then shut down and re-start.

Will leave it as have heard these thing train and will get there, just making sure its normal.

Should I adjust any settings on the netgear router? how and what?

Thanks guys you are a great help

You don't have to do anything except keep your router plugged in and switched on. If it drops it should reconnect automatically, you do not need to reboot it. If it does not reconnect itself, something is wrong so you should report it to Sky.

      Oh ok.

It did shut down, but I was running u-torrent at the time saying my port was not forwarded, then my internet just shut down with the red x over my computer symbol on the bottom right.

Will leave it next time and see if it re-connects, if not will call sky.

Fingers crossed for better speeds in several days

      Thanks again guys.

You might want to post your router stats so we can give you a better idea of the maximum speed you will get.

Re: New broadband, weird speeds and shut downs?

It sounds like your problem is with wireless, try connecting via ethernet to see if that cures it.

Failing that you could try changing the wireless channel on the router, start at 13 and work your way down.

With wireless my speeds range from 1mb upto 11mb, with ethernet or homeplugs I get 16.4mb all the time.

Re: New broadband, weird speeds and shut downs?

I am wireless, my pc is upstairs and my router is hooked up to the PS3 downstairs.

How do I change the router settings? It might be that my neighbour who is with sky as well is on the same channel, and other as well that pop up.

Dont know how to post stats or setting.

      Please help a newbie.

      Thanks again
