as it looks like there is not really an easy way of doing anything about the problem without running cables I guess I'll have to live with the slow speed. It's not the end of the world, but it would of been good to at least get the the 4.5Meg that bt and sky both say I should be capable of

I appreciate all the help from everyone. If you have any other new ideas then let me know

      Re: another stats check

You could just disconnect the ring wire on terminal 3 on all of the extensions, this would do the same thing as a filtered faceplate.

No it wouldn't, it would do much the same as fitting an iPlate, which is a completely different thing. Click the 'Filtered Faceplate' link above to find out what it does.

      Re: another stats check

i've just changed the rj-11 cable from the socket to the router for a better one

      stats have now changed to

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.5 db 24.6 db
Noise Margin 13.2 db 11.5 db

which looks a bit better to me. Noise margin has gone up a LOT

do I now just leave it for a coiuple of days and see what happens? or contact sky and see if they can uncap?

      Re: another stats check

I would give it a couple of days, if tomorrow evening your noise margin is still high give them a call and ask if you cap can be raised. With those figures you should get 1+Mb more.

      Re: another stats check

got impatient and phoned sky just now

my line had been capped to 3 meg. They have now moved the cap to 8meg

it is now syncing at 8meg with a noise margin of 7.2

done a couple of download tests and I do seem to be getting the full 8meg which is nice. Will give it a few days and see what happens

thanks for everyones help. It seems that the RJ11 cable that shipped with my router was the main culprit in my speed problems, but that seems a bit strange

I have learned a lot more about the broadband connection and what to check now so it has been a very useful experience for me

      Re: another stats check

That is surprising, I wonder if there are many more struggling with speeds due to a dodgy RJ11 cable? Can you post your stats? Have you tried again from the Test socket?

      Re: another stats check

in my normal socket stats are now

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8190 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.5 db 24.6 db
Noise Margin 3.8 db 12.0 db

the noise margin has dropped over the past few hours. It started around 7

I'll have a go in the test socket later and see how that looks. I can't really believe that the massive change is all just to do with a dodge cable

Could suggest down to the plug/socket at one end or the other?
