      Hmm heres a question!

Hi guys, just curious..i have noticed my download speeds to be around 1.3-1.6 meg depending on what i'm downloading and from where...would i be right in thinking that download speed is essentially taking the first 1 or two digits of your sync speed and putting a decimal point in place?
      IE:
at 16000 sync you can get a max of 1.6MBps download...and at 8000 sync you can get a download speed of .8MBps aka 800KBps??
Is this correct or am i reading into it totally wrong? and if i am wrong what is the maximum download speed you could theoretically get if you sync at around 16000?
(actual download speed, not sync speed...alot of people seem to mix this up!)
The other thing i was wondering is how do i go about raising my noise margin on a DG834G? or is this not possible? would raisin the NM cause my downloads to speed up but my sync speed to reduce?

Sorry for all the questions but as a PC engineer i am always interested in expanding my knowledge of ADSL, Cable and Networking in general, hence the questions

Thanks for any answers i get!!!
      Tony

no, you actually get more than that.

Basically, if you divide the connection speed i.e. 8Mbps (8192kbps), by 8, you'll roughly get the maximum download speed, so in this case, you'd get 1meg, or about 1000k download.

      So at 16Mbps, you'll get 2 meg, or 2000k

you will always lose a little to overhead, but I have a 10mbps connection, and regularly get 1200k downloads

Thanks for clearing that up indefatigable, it makes so much more sense now..and that means at 1.5meg download i'm not doing too bad on my connection.
The other thing i was wondering is how do i go about raising my noise margin on a DG834G? or is this not possible? would raising the NM cause my downloads to speed up but my sync speed to reduce?

You can normally expect to download at at about 85-90% of your sync speed, due to overheads.

Raising your noise margin will lower your sync speed and consequently your download speed. It is only advised if you have an unstable line that needs capped down and should not be necessary if the router is operating properly.

So the bottom line for me is my line speed seems good, my downloads are between 1.3 and 1.5MBps and gaming seems fine too..i should just walk away now and be happy LOL!!

      Thanks again people
