      Keep losing connection

      Hello everyone,

I have posted on the sky forum a long time ago as I was looking for a new ISP that wasn't Virgin! After talking to a few people I knew as soon as I move house then Sky would be the way forward.

After ordering the full package Sky talk,Tv and BB which has in total taken a month to set up I feel like the end is in sight.

The only problem I seem to have at the moment is with my BB, this may be me being impatient tho and if this is the case I do apologize for wasting peoples time.

I received the router within 2 days of ordering and tried to see if it work the following day, to my surprise there was a BB connection, things were looking good! The next day I receive a letter saying my activation is going to be a week later and not to turn my router on.

I am finding my current connection seems to have a good speed but the connection keeps droping, is this something to do with me using the router to early?

      These are my current stats,
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6432 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 16 db
Noise Margin 0 db 22 db

Hope someone can advise on whats happening!

      Thanks

Yep in short lol. At the moment there shouldn't be a signal on the line, if there is one its a test signal. Once you go live you should have no worries with those attenuation stats.

      Re: Keep losing connection

It does not look like a test speed. It is a Connect connection and could be 'online' several days before the active date if BTO engineers were working in the exchange.

The noise margin has dropped to 0, which is why it is dropping out. As it is training it will keep dropping your sync speed until the line stabilises. You could end up with a very low speed. You should make sure your internal wiring is up to scratch by plugging into the Test socket, link below. Post your stats from there.

      Re: Keep losing connection

      Hello,

Ok today is my live date and have checked the order status which is showing as complete, tried my connection this morning and the stats were showing a 7db noise margin which from my research seems to be good. Have recently got home and gone to play online to notice an amber light flashing on the router every 5-10 mins, now getting a 1-2db noise margin.

The property i'm living in is brand new and I have had to have a BT engineer come out to install the phone line so i cant imagine a wiring problem. What do you think I should do to try and sort this?

Just to repeat -You should make sure your internal wiring is up to scratch by plugging into the Test socket, link below. Post your stats from there.

Wiring being new is no guarantee of it's quality.

      Re: Keep losing connection

      Thanks for the reply,

The trouble is for some unknown reason my main socket is located somewhere which isnt easily accessible in terms of getting power there (dont ask why!). I dont think it is a problem with the wiring as in the morning the Db strength was spot on, wasnt until after 5 that it kept dropping.

I have since read a post on how to increase the noise margin and by rebooting the router when the Db is any lower then 6.5. This has been done numerous times and now seems to be keepin between 7-10 Db.

I now am finding the speed is suffering and when doing a speed test is staying at about 500 kbps where as this morning was 4500kbps.

I do understand my line is very new but after seeing the thread about sky connect being capped as much as it is this really is worrying me.

      Re: Keep losing connection

Capping would not alter your stats, until you do what has been advised regarding the master and test socket nobody can really help, the stats from the test socket will indicate what is wrong or at lease where it is going wrong.

It is pointless asking for advice and then when you get it ignore it.

Lot's of new propertys are wired by electricians and they tend to use whatever cable they have, alarm cable seems to be a favorite, they also tend to plug in every terminal when you should only be using 2 & 5, any extra wires connected can cause a lot of noise.

      Re: Keep losing connection

You should really have a couple of dbs to spare in the morning as the line gets noisier in the evening and will drop out. Booting when the line is noisy will keep the line stable but as you have discovered, there is a speed penalty to pay. You should get hold of an electric extension and try it in your Test socket. If it cures your problem, a more permanent solution could be found.

Thanks for that Isitme, i'll look at this as soon as possible, seems like I overlooked getting an extension lead in the panic of have a bad bb connection and not being able to resolve it.
