      Recurring problem of slow speeds.

I should probably start by saying that I don't know the vast majority of the technical stuff you discuss here but I will do my best to be as coherent as possible.

I've had Sky BB for over a year now. It was advertised as 8MB but I was told that I could only get 4MB in my area, which was fine with me. It worked great for about a year until one day I started to only be able to dl at 160KB/s and soon after that my latency became incredibly high in online games and I started to disconnect frequently also. I called sky twice and both times they asked me to wait 30minutes whilst they connected me to someone else. Both times the call randomly ended mid conversation.

So I gave up with that and tried to tolerate the speed whilst looking for an answer online. However, a month or two later, it was back to normal again and I couldn't figure out why. I didn't question it much. This has lasted for a few months now but the same problem has occurred again. The speed is now much worse at a max of ~100kb/s. Resetting the router doesn't help.

I've seen these stats several times but haven't been able to make sense of them:

      Router Status

      Account Name
      Firmware Version V1.03.87

      ADSL Port
      MAC Address 00:18:4D:42:ED5
      IP Address 90.198.254.181
      Network Type PPPoA
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
      Gateway IP Address 87.87.249.139
      Domain Name Server 90.207.238.97
      90.207.238.99

      LAN Port
      MAC Address 00:18:4D:42:ED4
      IP Address 192.168.0.1
      DHCP On
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 832 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 416 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

      Wireless Port
      Name (SSID) SKY56193
      Region Europe
      Channel 11
      Wireless AP Enabled
      Broadcast Name Enabled

      Also:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 832 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 10.6 db 14.0 db

I also went to Start-Run-cmd and pinged google and it reported a 75% loss. This issue appears to have fixed itself however as it looks fine now.

To rule out internal wiring problems the first thing you must do is plug into your Test socket and post the stats from there. Link below.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1824 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 13.7 db 14.0 db

A noticeable increase but still far from the 4600 it used to be. Also, I worked out that I'm 3.4km from the exchange. I should be expecting speeds of around 7MB from the table I saw, or am I not on ADSL2+ ?

I also had to remove my extension cable (it is an ADSL filter separate to the one Sky provided me, necessary because regular extensions didn't work). Now I have reconnected a Sky microfilter.

EDIT: I should probably also add that I have two desktop pcs. One is on the same floor as the router and connects via ethernet cable. The other, which is the one I use most often is one floor above and connects wirelessly. All posted stats have been taken by the latter, although they seem to match up whenever I look at them on the other pc. Also, because the master socket is so far from either pc, the ethernet cable is currently not connected to anything because I would have had to move my pc there which I decided not to.

Another update: ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2304 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 13.8 db 14.0 db

This is now that I've put everything the way it was before (extension used) but plugged into the engineers socket like in the guide.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

Have you tried the TestSocket without the Extension or is the 2.3mb what you received like this.

According to the Attenuation is is better and your Snr is higher meaning you should expect around 3.5mb

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

Can you plug into the Test socket using the RJ11 cable provided by Sky and take your stats from your wireless connection. Router stats taken by wireless will be exactly the same as stats taken by ethernet cable. What you have posted so far shows that your internal wiring is the cause of your low speed. If you can eliminate the telephone extension it is quite likely you will get above 4Mbs.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

I did, and I got these speeds:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1824 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 13.7 db 14.0 db

I then reconnected it, and the speed went up to these:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2304 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 13.8 db 14.0 db

I also tried two different microfilters, both without an extension used and therefore plugged in directly. There was no difference so the microfilters must both work. I also got the same speed without them using my own filter (the extension) and there was still no increase. Now I've put the faceplate back on and the speed still hasn't increased.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

These latest stats are much better. You should invest in a filtered faceplate and fit it at the master socket along with the router. That sould see good speeds and a stable line.

If you can keep these latest stats then you should get nearer to you 6-7mb.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

I am afraid I do not understand why you get a better result using an extension. This is against all the teachings of how to get a good result.

Your line is capped at 2304kbps, so your speed will not rise until you phone Sky and ask them to lift the cap. This may involve going through the trouble-shooting routine with Tier 1, so it would be better if you were plugged into the Test socket when you phone.

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

I don't think it went up because of the extension. More likely that it fluctuates around a certain speed and that it happened to go up at that time.

There's also the fact that its slightly lower now:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1792 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 14.0 db

Guess I'll have to call sky........ sigh

Re: Recurring problem of slow speeds.

To be honest with the last stats you posted, you will be wasting your time. Your noise margin must be in double figures or you will gain nothing. The noise margin shown in your post #6 would have supported about another 1.5Mbs. Your latest show your line getting just about as much as it can take.
