SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

If my friend runs a long cable from a spare bedroom where the telephone socket is located to the SAGEM router which is positioned in a bedroom close to the PC, she get an immediate connection with excellent strength.

She is using a Netgear Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter. WG111.

With this setup she can have days of trouble free Internet Connection.

Move the SAGEM router back close to the telephone socket (saves having wires running across the landing), a distance of about 8 m, then the signal strength drops to poor. Not only that, she keeps losing the connection.

Any help would be much appreciated.

      Thank you.

Try changing the channel number for the wireless from 6 to 11 or similar.

Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

      Thanks for that NewreadeR,

The actual channel was set to "auto".

I talked it through on the phone with me friend and she has changed it to "11".

Will report back later if the signal stays strong when she moves the SAGEM router 8m away grom the PC. Fingers crossed.

You might also want to put the adapter on a USB cable and move it around instead of moving the router. You might find moving it just a couple of feet can make a big difference. There are DIY boosters you can make, but that is another story.

Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

Thanks for advice Isitme that's something for us to try next.

I do have a metre length of USB cable provided to extend the range and obtain a better reception of an adapter. I will get my friend to add that tomorrow.

As for now, things have improved by setting the SAGEM router to search for Channel 11. (Was auto). Thanks NewreadeR.

The SAGEM router is now by the telephone socket in a spare bedroom, about
      8m away from the PC.

The connection is now made immediately and is permanent. There has been no dis-connections.

      Speed: 54.0 Mbps
      Signal Strength: Low

Not sure about this. Is the "Low" a problem? I think the speed is okay. Am I right?

Once more, any help will be most appreciated as I think progress is being made.

      Thank you

      Bryan

Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

      Getting better.

Tonight suggested that my friend try different channels.

She found that Channel 8 gave her:
      Signal Strength: Good

One last think to try. The 3m USB extension cable to get the wireless adapter closer to the router.

      Watch this space.

Thumbs up Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

      Perfect.

The extension which was provided did what it said it would, it increased the signal strength.

      Now: Channel 8
Adapter on a one metre extension cable

      Result:
      Speed: 54.0Mbps
      Signal strength: Excellent.

Thanks to you both for addvice offered.

Ok now throw them all away and fit a couple of homeplugs, No issues over interference and no worries about people trying to hijack your wireless.

Works just like having a wire connected and you can move them from plug to plug if you need.

Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

      Dead right Smithy99.

If my friend had been starting from scratch this would definitely have been the way to go.

Recently she paid about 35 for the Netgear wireless adapter and at present could not afford the extra outlay.

      Perhaps next time around.

      Cheers

Re: SAGEM Router. How close to wireless PC?

So many people hear about wireless and think it is the bees knees, if only they knew.

It's a bit like the ofd Betamax dideo tapes, miles better quality than the VHS but people jumped ship thinking that the newer one was better and we were stuck with it.

You cannot beat a piece of wire to move around you data, sending it through the air is asking for trouble.
