      Suggestions...

      Greetings,

      My sons stats are:

      Sagem F@ST 2504 [Sky Firmware]

      ADSL LinkDownstreamUpstream
      Connection Speed761 kbps252 kbps
      Line Attenuation45.0 db24.2 db
      Noise Margin12.8 db30.5 db

      Sky Package BB Max.

Stats are the same even when the router is connected to the master socket and the test socket.

Now when I lived here I had 2 lines and when the ex's brother moved in next door and wanted the phone on 1 line was split with a DACS. The phone was then turned off and has only recently been put back on. Now nextdoor gets about 6.5Mb but when ever the house phone rings the router disconnects BT and O2/Be are supposed to be looking into the problem.

I am therefore wondering if this line my son has now is basically kaput. And if no one can come up with some ideas as to the cause then I'm gona suggest he contact Sky and get them to either solve the problem or drop his package to the free one as he's obviously not getting anywhere near what he's paying for.

what does the SNR look like in the test socket though?...

you're capped, though, and on a good line oyu'd be looking at 7Mbps but it depends on the SNR in the test socket...

      Re: Suggestions...

If there are any extensions in the house I would be very surprised if the stats were the same. As IANTE says, the noise margin may rise, which being capped for speed, is the important thing.

Also has he tried a quiet line check. Plug a corded phone into the Test socket and dial 17070 option 2, the result should be a quiet line with only a very faint hiss, no snaps crackles or pops.

      Re: Suggestions...

      Greetings,

Not sure about the SNR but will check it again in the Master/Test when I'm next round there.

Well when I checked it the other night there was no difference in the speed no matter where the router was plugged in but then I could barely see as I didn't have my Glasses with me... Had to rely on others to tell me what I was seeing...

      Re: Suggestions...

If capped the speeds will stay the same but the important clue is the change in noise margin when on the test socket.

      Re: Suggestions...

That shows that there is a problem with the internal wiring. Fitting and plugging into an ADSL filtered plate will fix this. If you do this and get the cap lifted, the connection speed should rise to at least 4Mb. The attenuation should support about 6Mb but noise on the external line may prevent this.

      Re: Suggestions...

Hey, if this is a problem do u live in a cable area? coz it sounds like u only use the line for internet, if this is the case, then u can do away with, the bt line, which is split for whatever reason and will sort the problems with your net connection.

      Re: Suggestions...

      Greetings,

      Nope no cable here, sadly.

Well I'l get son to contact Sky about the cap but the extension is long as the socket is at the front of the house and his bedroom is at the back. At a guess I'd say the extension was getting on for 50 feet long...

      Re: Suggestions...

The extension is probably the issue then, why not plant the router on the socket via short cable and run an ethernet cable from rotuer to pc?
