      New Slow Speed Problem

      Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on a problem I'm having (I've posted in the "Exchange Info" section too).

Basically my connection has dropped from a steady 7meg download speed (for about 9 months+) to sub 500k over the past week and a half - obviously this is unacceptable!

I'm on the Swindon (Blunsdon) exchange and until a couple of weeks back have been on a free Sky Mid package (free due to many initial issues when I first changed to Sky). Sky have since disabled "Mid" and the others on this exchange and your only option is "Connect" - Now it seems when my billing changed so I have the joy of paying 17 for my connection, the speed coincidentally dropped drastically too (this was all in the past two weeks).

Is there any reason for this? My noise margins, errors etc. are all fine, the indicated speed is still "8128kbps" on the router so I can't see why this issue has come up. I've reconnected/powered-down all numerous times at numerous times of day! The speed is the same on speedtest.net (about 450kbps, though latency is fine - 30-40ms) regardless of time of day.

I know the drills, I can't be arsed frankly to speak to the Indian retards at vast cost to myself to tell me to unplug my router for 10 secs so I'm trying here first - any help is greatly appreciated as usual!!

      Cheers,

      Jim.

      go to Test Result
      enter your phone number
enter you username as <yourmacaddress>@skydsl (use the MAC on the bottom of the router or the LAN port MAC in the router status page)
it'll give you your sync speed and your IP profile...if this isn't 7150kbps or there about there's your problem...

      Re: New Slow Speed Problem

      Well here's the result -

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
      Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 449 kbps

Hmmm, IP Profile 500kbps?? Does that mean Sky are limiting me? Doesn't sound good in any case

      Re: New Slow Speed Problem

Nothing to do with Sky. BT's system has found a fault on the connection and reduced your profile accordingly. If it was a temporary fault, your Profile should return in about 3days. If it has been going on for longer you will have to phone Sky and ask them to get BT to look at your connection.

Did Sky give a reason why they withdrew the Mid service? Your exchange has been enabled for a couple of years, it seems strange they should withdraw. It may be a good time to get on your bike, as Connect seems to be nothing but trouble, especially with the throttling.

      Re: New Slow Speed Problem

Yeah, my neighbours tried to get Sky about six months back and were told it's not available, as do the current Sky line tests - I was one of the first in the area and dealt with lots of crap to get it working (hence the free mid) - in the end a guy from BT came out and patched me direct to the exchange, avoiding the mess at the local junction box. I've had 7meg consistent download over wireless since. No idea why they stopped it.

Having now looked at the massive sticky on Connect it seems I'm screwed. I don't fancy spending 50 on calls going through Sky's "support" only to be told there's nothing they can do. Seems odd to me this "problem" on my line only came up when I had to start paying again - something must have ticked a box somewhere saying "shaft this customer" on it - as many others seem to have!

I'm happy to change ISP (O2 any good, get good prices on that! ) - my only issue being the loss of the sky.com email addresses, can you still access these if you change?

Cheers for the info in anycase, I lose the will with these companies, seems everyone's out to get you if you are a loyal customer

P.S. If I call Sky to get them to sort is there now an easy way or do I have to go via India telling me to reset my router etc...... ?

You have to go via tier 1 which may mean talking to an offshore agent or a UK based one.
