BT engineer coming to look at my line problem

      New thread created

      Hi Saturday,

Bt Phoned me up to ask about taking there BB.Told them that i was tied to contract with Sky,i mentioned that my line has an intermittant fault,ie.cannot hear people talking and crackly noise on the line( intermittant ) he gave me this number to call 0800 800150 to report the problem.I called them and got the normal ..we will test your line and call you back..which they did and said there is nothing wrong with your line. But they will send out an engineer and if he cannot find a fault they would charge me 113 plus about 90 .They are sending an engineer tomorrow morning, between 8-1.

I have removed my filtered faceplate and put the BT one back on,here are my Stats.

      System Up Time: 0:03:31

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 25 20 0 744 92 0:02:32
      LAN 1449 1157 0 154 834 0:03:31
      WLAN 0 0 0 0 0 0:03:06
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8447 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.5 db 16.6 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 14.5 db

Can you give me any handy tips to make sure i donot have to pay ?
      Many Thanks

The best tip I can offer is be nice to the engineer. Offer them tea/coffee/ bacon buttie or whatever. Smile a lot. Tell them that it is an intermittent fault i.e. sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not. Don't talk about broadband at all i.e. broadband is inconsequential to the problem you are having making/receiving calls.

In my experience BT engineers are pretty reasonable people and won't want you to have to pay if you seem a good guy. Of course there are exceptions and you'll have to hope you don't get the engineer from hell.

If you do get clobbered with a bill, fight it. BT will have a hard time proving an intermittent fault doesn't exist.

No, you don't need to be secretive, just keep your broadband use/needs out of the conversation. If asked say you don't use it much and it seems fine.

My understanding is that the engineer will decide whether to raise a charge or not. I doubt they'd discuss that with you unprovoked. Might be best to raise the issue i.e. you're worried about any bill. Remember though, if there's a fault with the BT line then you're not liable. If they can't find one (but you're convinced there is one) then again, you can argue the case not to pay.
