wireless help on notebook with xp

hi all hope you can be so kind as to help.

have had sky for 14 months on this desktop with no issues at all. recently bought a small netbook that came pre installed with linux os. upon startup the wireless connection was excellent (after entering wep key) and never failed in the week or so i have used it.

last night i installed a copy of xp on the netbook and the notebook is fully functioning under xp now.

however i cant make a wireless connection to my router. under wireless networks the network is being found but most of the time i get the message "connecting to network" and then a message saying no available wireless networks were able to be connected.

following some of the general google advice i have changed the wireless network name, and changed the wpa-psk key the channel number is at 11 (as it was previously)

i have also turned access control on and added the netbook (i need to check the mac code is correct but i think its is was only 13 digit code on base)

none of this has worked so far, as said above the connection was lovely when using linux so it is obviously an xp compatablility problem question is what is it )

turn UPnP off on the router (assuming you've got a Phase 1)...

Re: wireless help on notebook with xp

ok have 2 wireless networks being found

sky73876 not sure which one this is tbh, came up with message saying connecting to network and had low signal strength (acquriing network message)

skybroadband (the network i have renamed) when i double click to connect to this one i get a message saying for waiting for the network and then nothing happens

how can i get it to just connect to my renamed sky broadband network? i presume it should be this one?

      thanks for all help btw

      have just noticed something

in wireless network connection the sky broadband network is showing as excellent signal strength, however despite moving the order it is still trying to connect to 73876 (i have no idea whether this mine as well or not)

Re: wireless help on notebook with xp

Uninstall the adapters software, reinstall the driver only. This forces it to use the Windows Manager and avoids conflicts which is one reason for failing to connect. Note that disabling the software does not always work, so uninstall it. Turn Access control off until you get the connection made. You have updated to atleast Sp2? MAC addresses are usually 6 sets of 2 characters = 12, I think, so I would remove anything you have put in manually.

If you want to check the MAC address, open a Command Prompt type ipconfig /all >Enter The address will be shown under the adapter name as its Physical Address.

If this is the SSID printed on your router's label, then it is yours, if yours is different then it is not.

Now you can turn on the Access control if you want to. Open the Section and your Netbook will be shown there. Select it and click Add.
