What OS? If its Vista, Window Defender does quite a good job. If you feel anything is wrong weekly scans with - SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

What AV are you running? many of these now include a Spyware component.

      Re: help with software

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware every time. Super Antispyware as a second option. As the free versions are scan on demand, you can install both and run when you want. No free anti-spyware are 'live' like AV's. CCleaner to clean up after yourself

      Re: help with software

      I tend to use,

      CCleaner - Reg cleaner
      Avast - Virus
      Spybot - Spyware
      Auslogic - Defragger

Being the sad person I am, I have a few viruses/malware stored on CD and release them on my machines at home to test from time to time, obviously not connected to the outside world, and then make sure they are clean before I do connect to the outside world.

You can disable the sound on Avast - Right click icon, Program settings, Sounds.
