      Transfer Speed

      Hi,
I have the Sky Max package and can download to either of my PC's at a constant 14000 mbps (from newsgroups for example). A 700mb film takes me no longer than 4-5 minutes to download but what kind of speed should I be expecting across my home network?

When I move the 700mb film from one PC to the other over my home network (browsing with explorer and copy & paste film from the one PC to the other) the transfer can take anywhere between 20-25 minutes.

Is this normal or have I not done something right?

If using a wired connection around 100mbps but using wireless it could be MUCH slower.

      Re: Transfer Speed

What OS are you using? Vista can be terribly slow at transferring files, even within the same PC, never mind over a network. Sp1 improved it slightly but it is sill slow. If it is taking 25 mins for 700 mb, you might be quicker using a USB stick.

      Re: Transfer Speed

Are all your adapters capable of 100mbps? If even one is a 10mbps, the rest will be dragged down to the same speed. If any of the port lights on your router are yellow/orange, it is only working at 10mbps.

It may be worthwhile going to the network adapters web site and downloading the latest drivers, then installing them.

The lights on the router are showing Green. The adapters are capable of 100 Mbps.

      Re: Transfer Speed

I have just transferred a 700Mb file from Vista to XP in 1min 25secs, so I would say there is something wrong with your set up somewhere. I am clutching at straws but is your AV program checking the file as it receives it? This could slow it down considerably.

You are using ethernet? Transferring by Wireless G will take a lot longer, although it may say 54mbps, you would be lucky to get 15-20 mbps.
