Noisy/Crackling Line after a few hours

      hello all

so after my initial problems about a year back (installed a faceplate) and having no problems till now hoping someone can help!

i've tried everything, but after some time of the router being connected and running at a decent speed, it slows down like anything and the voice line begins to crackle

here are my stats after a decent connection and now a crackling line:
      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 5.2 6.0
      Attn(dB): 11.5 7.4
      Pwr(dBm): 6.0 10.8
      Max(Kbps): 12536 864
      Rate (Kbps): 14523 764

it's strange that after ages this problem has just started occurring, nothing's changed in the house and there is no reason i can think of why this would happen.

i have a feeling it's the router but not sure why

      any suggestions?

Odd symptoms which I've not come across before. If you can hear crackling then there's certainly a fault somewhere but the puzzling part is that you say it arises after running the router for a while

Like you, I'd suspect the router but breakthrough into the voice bandwidth would normally give audible tones or hum and a properly working filter should prevent that anyway.

A couple of suggestions: although you have a filtered faceplate, plug a filter into it (and on any extensions in use) as there's a possibility your faceplate has failed i.e. double filter your connection; check if your router is getting too hot (warm to touch is OK).

Problems with telephone lines can and do occur all the time. If the line is noisy when you check it at the test socket with a normal wired telephone (dial a single digit to kill the dial tone and you should hear nothing but a low hiss) then report it to whoever you pay your line rental to.

this is the thing, it's not BT (my phone provider) as the test socket works (phone line)

and unplugging the router also results in a clear phone line

Re: Noisy/Crackling Line after a few hours

Righto then, remove the filter faceplate and connect a phone and the router using another filter (as sat suggested) and see if this cures the problem. Do you have an old router?. If you still have the problem you could try an old router, it will sync with the exchange but you will have no Internet access. If this results in a clear line, you need a new router from Sky but if the problem is still there, then you need to contact Sky, who need in turn to contact Openreach to repair your line.

Re: Noisy/Crackling Line after a few hours

I had EXACTLY the same problem a while back. Phone line crackling, BB slowing, then stopping untill i pick the phone up, then it re synced! Got BT openreach out and after about 3hrs of fault finding, they had to replace a pull of cable about 1/2 mile away due to corroision in a poorly done jelly!! Now perfect!!

Re: Noisy/Crackling Line after a few hours

When you contact Sky they will want to send you a new router to try first. They will not contact Openreach untill they have done this, so dont get upset with them, they must go down this route, because if it turns out to be the router they get a big bill from Openreach.
