Live Messenger unconnectable - Firmware issue?

Ok, so many months ago, Probably a bit over half a year: Windows Live Messenger decided it would not connect to the net. I'd had this happen before and been able to fix it with various command prompts, but this time it was useless. The error was a familiar
      error code 81000306

The servers were running, the connectivity test on messenger all came up fine but no dice. I even made sure the common ports for messenger were free to give it every chance. But no matter what version of live messenger i ran, uninstalled, downloaded, no connection. Compilation programs like trillian were no good either. HOWEVER browser based versions of live messenger work fine, even the one on their site.

So I put up with this for a long time on my old XP machine. But now I've just bought a new PC, vista (oh well) and exactly the same problem. Same error code: 81000306. Having done some more research it seems this is a problem in the netgear firmware of my
      DG834GT
      Firmware Version V1.03.87

And supposedly the sky firmware is probably the issue. And I'm sure there are some fixes involving forcefully upgrading the firmware (since Sky decide that even though their firmware sucks, you can't use one that actually works).

      Does this sound about right?
Is it likely that changing the firmware would fix this problem?

And more importantly, why haven't sky upgraded their firmware recently to fix such issues?

Any help appreciated. Rant over. Oh, my net was down for weeks earlier this year and it took weeks longer for the problem between me and the exchange to get sorted, so i'm not a happy bunny with Sky right now :P

Re: Live Messenger unconnectable - Firmware issue?

If it was a firmware issue then no one would be able to sign in on messenger who is using the service on Sky. Since I can sign in here it can't be just a firmware issue and nothing to do with sky.

The only things those 2 PC's have in common are the Router and the Firmware. So if PaulSky has the same firmware/router and is able to log on, it must be the router? I must iterrate that EVERYthing does/has always connected fine. And even the browserbased versions of the same messenger work.

Have you got version 2009. I had a problem were messenger would not sign in. It turned out to be the AVG anti virus blocking it. I turned off messenger protection in the avg settings and messenger then signed in. It also happens with I think Norton.

I have Windows Live Messeger Version 2009
      build 14.0.8050.1202

      Only have Bullguard
      and Windows Firewall

on this new comp. I've tried loggin in with both disabled and no dice.

      ---

On the old comp. I had Windows Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy

Again I tried loggin with both disabled but no luck.

      ---

I am relatively sure it's the router , as it's the only common denominator ...

      OK

After further inspection and opening a couple ports on the router. Then I am able to connect to live messenger after disabling bullguard.

Thanks to those who offered their help.
And thanks to Paul who confirmed it was not the firmware and gave me the impetus to get to the route of the problem.

Sometimes the easy options aren't the right ones lol. You would be surpised what sort of weird issues a port issue or firewall config can throw up. At least it works now for you, well done for perservering.
