when you report the fault a line test is done. If there is no noise at that time then you will be warned that if Openreach attend, and no fault is found ,you will be charged. When you report the fault, tell them it is intermittant, and you would like a visit. This should reduce the chance of being charged

Hi, I phoned today and they ran a test and said there was no fault on the line, (there clearly is).
They're sending an engineer on friday morning.
Shall I re-insert the orange wires?
They also said I'll be charged if it's a problem with my handset, (they didn't mention anything about extensions or DIY)

      Any ideas?

Yes put the ring wires back(the orange ones).
Now when the Openreach Tech attends, try and get his attention towards your old master and he/she may replace it as a matter of course. If they do try and make sure that the wiring is adjusted so that the other extension is wired from the faceplate of it. This can be tricky because you dont want to appear to tell them how to do their job, If they just replace the master and check out the wiring that will be fine and we can take any further problems from there.

And a coffee or tea works wonders, as does not making too much fuss if they are a bit late.
      Good luck

Cool, our noisy phone line is intermittent and I'm worring that if they test the line they're gonna say it's fine.

Impress on the Openreach Tech the intermittant nature of the fault, and of course sod's law says the line is fine today! that should see you alright.

Thanks. Have you seen the pics I uploaded of the junction box thing?
It's looking a bit old and worn, do you reckon they can/will charge to replace it?
And when they open it do you think they'll see that it's been messed with?

He/She may replace it, but no they wont know you've been in there, They will be snowed under (no pun intended) with a job list and they will just want to fix your problem, Thats where being nice comes in, so they dont want to leave as quickly as possible but will go the extra mile for you.

Deny any knowledge of tampering and claim it must have been the previous occupier.

thanks guys, I get easily worried about most things and the thought of a 100+ bill was getting me nervous.
      So,
I gotta be nice (I am anyway) aha
      Tea etc
would it be best to say somethig like "I think it's the old master box thats giving me trouble"?
