      Question 16mb - what am I getting?

I am paying for the best package sky has to offer.
My max upload is 80kbps and max download is about 300kbps.

      This is pathetic.
I am not miles and miles away from the exchange server.

Can someone explain to me what is going on and what I should do to improve my situation?

Have you read any of the other posts regarding poor speeds or the tutorials etc?

We need your router stats to get an idea of your connection, we're not all mind readers you know

You are paying for an 'Up to 16Mb' connection, what you get can be anything between that and 512kbps. It depends entirely on your phone line. Post your stats and mention where the router is plugged in, ie, master socket, extension socket or loose extension.

      Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

@Smithy99 - I have read several posts matching the upload speed results 80 kbps.

I am at work right now so I cannot post stats. I tried looking for a postcode / telephone number exchange point stats but cannot find one with speeds.

My router is plugged in at the mains and is in the same room as my computer.

When I go to speedtest.net at work i get like 600kbps upload but when I actually upload a large file it is basically 40kbps.. Wth is going on?

How is your telephone lead plugged in?
At the master socket or on an extension, if the former do you have additional telephone extensions?

      Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

Without router stats and a more detailed explination of how you are connected to the phoneline etc it will be a wild guess at what the problem may be.

Many things can effect your speed from wireless interference to poor wiring, most of the faults come from the customer side of things and not Sky's so I would always advise that ALL your setup it checked before you go chasing Sky.

Question Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

I am using a wireless connection and the router is plugged into the adapter sky provided which is plugged into the phone line.

      Here is my router settings:
      Modem
      DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 768 kbps

What do those settings tell you? Why am I uploading at 80kbps? Not even 1mb

If I buy a switch would that help? What if I use another router? I have a spaire netgear one from university but I need to get the password from Sky.. Are these possible options?

      Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

the router is synching at a good speed, your connecting via wireless and all sorts of problems could be coming from that,

Does it still give awful speeds when you use ethernet?

If not then it's a problem with your wi-fi and can be made better with changing the wi-fi channel.

      Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

As the guys have said you need to give us a bit more info ( and ditch the wireless initially)
Youve got the V1 router so full stats from the TEST socket would be a good start.
Use this to get them Mel's Notes: Dg834gt-1skuk
This info will show whether a move to adsl would be beneficial, as your sync of less than 8 meg would indicate you are on gdmt.

      Re: 16mb - what am I getting?

it could be that you have alot of programs accessing the internet on your computer/other computers in the house. make sure you close any programs that you dont need open (that could be using your internet connection) and then run the speed test again. check your wireless signal strength and try connecting through the ethernet cable as suggested above and then run the speed test again. maybe try a few different speed test sites also, i have virgin broadband but i get slightly different results from different sites
