You were syncing at 3 meg with a noise margin of 14.7db. Now you're syncing at 3.5meg but haven't said what your noise margin is. I'd guess around 13db?

If so then you have 5-6db to play with above the default noise margin of 6.9db.

Depending on the type of noise present on your line, if any, (noise bursts are a big problem for example), then you could expect up to 3meg more than you currently have.

It's a question of trial and error plus judgement on the best compromise between sync speed and line errors. At face value, I feel Sky may have been overly pessimistic bearing in mind the high noise margin you had.

OK, no probs. My V1 sky router is connected directly to the phone line master test socket. From there I have a 85mbps homeplug, with another in here which goes into a DG834G router which has been set as a switch.

I don't think Sky have removed the cap, just lifted it slightly. I don't know why Sky cap at all, if their system and the router are working properly, there should be no need to cap. The router should sync at the best speed it can at its default noise margin. OK if there is a spike in the noise rate it may cause the router to drop its connection, but it should connect again immediately.
As Saturday says your attenuation could support a speed of 5-6Mbs. Let us have a look at your current stats.

Re: Help with noise margin please

Yes, your noise margin is still high and your line errors are fairly low. You could definitely sync higher uncapped.
