Wireless Connection problems (new laptop with vista)

Hi got a problem with my (Netgear DG834GT) sky broadband wireless connection, since I purchased a new laptop with vista installed on it, i keep loosing connection and so do the rest of the family which are: (3x laptops with xp installed on all of them) I am not sure but there must be some sort of confliction between xp and vista wireless settings, as there has not been any problems till i got my Laptop, Sorry hope this makes sense, any advise would be greatfull as the kids and wife are giving me lots of ear ache over it. Added a bit more info below

Stan

Vista laptop: Samsung R610
xp laptops: 2x Packard Bell Easynote R9200 1x IBM Thinkpad T42
Wireless Router info: the i on the front of router goes orange for awhile (1-5 mins) then back to green, this can happen 10 -15 times aday

If you need more info please let me know.................

Sorry But I was asked to try this but still no joy really:

Try unchecking “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and "QoS Packet Scheduler".

To do that, Right click on Wireless Network Connection, and then click “Configure”.
If asked for permission to open Network Connections, click on Allow.
Highlight the following items and press the “Uninstall” button:
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder

and then uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)” and "QoS Packet Scheduler".

Re: Wireless Connection problems (new laptop with vista)

Does your internet light drop off completely or go amber?
If yes, whats your physical setup like? Router stats?

If no.. Change the wireless channel in the router..

Open browser > Clear address bar > enter: 192.168.0.1
User: admin
Pass: sky

Setup > Wireless settings > Wireless channel = 13
Click apply.

Should sort it.

Re: Wireless Connection problems (new laptop with vista)

if the i light on your router(internet light) turns amber than there is no issue with the wireless signal, the best way to find out if it is a wireless issue is wait until your internet light turns amber and see if your laptops still say they are connected with good signal strength in the system tray(bottom right hand corner).

if your internet light drops out or turns amber then you have an issue with the router not receiving your internet signal rather than your computer not receiving your routers signal. make sure your router is connected directly to your master socket via a microfilter(no extension cables) and make sure there is a microfilter on every phone port in the house that has a device connected(fax machines, sky tv etc). this shouldnt be a hard adjustment to make if you are connected wirelessly anyway, if it doesnt resolve the issue then try connecting to your test socket(located behind your master socket's faceplate..unscrew the 2 screws and connect your microfilter to the port inside).

best of luck, misfit96

Highlight the following items and press the “Uninstall” button:
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder
You should not have uninstalled these, they are used by Vista to discover other PCs on your Network. You should in fact install them on your XP machines to make them visible to Vista. The download can be found here -
Download details: Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120)
Unchecking IPv6 is OK as it is not yet in use in UK.

Re: Wireless Connection problems (new laptop with vista)

After Isitme saying that i should not have uninstalled Link layers I reinstalled vista and up untill I installed an optional windows update wireless driver:

Atheros Communications Inc. - Network - Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter (December 2008)

I had none of my original problems that led me here in the 1st place, So after roll backing the driver my connection has been great (Fingers Crossed)

I like to thank all for there advice, Also if anyone is having connection problems maybe this might just help

Never ever ever accept a driver update from MS. If there is an update available, get it from the adapter manufacturer. MS are famous for messing things up with so called driver updates.

Certainly Did!! Having had the same problems as yourself and wondered if maybe the new driver was interupting the router, goes orange then green a lot during the day. Have rolled back driver so hopefully will be much better. If its not good to install ms drivers, where is a more secure one if its needed? Many thanks.

Re: Wireless Connection problems (new laptop with vista)

Find out the make and model of the adapter, go to the manufacturers site and look for support/drivers. Very often the Device Manager will give yu sufficient information but sometimes you have to use something like Everest
