what wireless device are you using to connect to the router?

usb device or pci inbuilt card?

have you tried de activating the wep going to 192...etc and coping the key exactly as it is?

Re: laptop will not connect to internet

Start off by disabling the wireless security in the router. 9 out of 10 connection problems are down to incorrect security settings. If you can connect, then you can think about security. Also make sure you are trying to connect to your own router by checking the SSID. It may seem silly but there are now a great many wireless networks, many using a Sky SSID, it is easy to try to hook up to the wrong one.

Re: laptop will not connect to internet

I think your problem stems from running XP Sp1, this had problems with WPA which were resolved by Sp2. If possible you should update to Sp2, apart from the wireless considerations, Sp1 was still full of security holes making the system very vulnerable to attack.

If you are unable to update for some reason, you can use WEP, which although not as secure as WPA, is better than nothing, especially with 128bit. Set up the security using an ethernet connection, not wireless. To do this select the WEP radio button in the wireless setting and use the drop box to select 128bit. Type a phrase into the passphrase box, this can be something like your favourite football team, click the Generate button. This will give you a selection of 4 keys to pick from. Choose a key by selecting the appropriate radio button. Click Apply. Open Notepad and copy and paste the selected key into it and save it as 'Passkey.txt'.

Now disconnect the ethernet cable and attempt to connect by wireless. Clicking Connect on the connection pane should bring up the password request. Make sure you have selected your own Network. Copy and paste the Key from the Notepad you saved to the box and click OK. It may take several minutes to make the first connection.

If you are able to connect post back for further measures you can take.

on your wired PC you can go to the Micrsoft website and pick up a full copy of SP2 or SP3, the one inteneded for network installs, pop it onto a cd and install it onto the laptop.

I don't know if it would improve things but SP1 did have some issues with wireless as stated above.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!
