      Is my upload speed normal?

      Hey everybody.

      I have been with sky for a while now. We use the mid range broadband i believe, or whichever lets us download at 8mb.
      My problem lies with my upload speed. It's 30kbps! This has been consistent regardless of our internet provider, and am not sure if sky is doing something here.

      Look at the speed test;
      http://www.speedtest.net/result/394022409.png

      In a usual downloading environment, I'll get around 500kbps download, with 30kbps upload.

      It just seems a little absurd to have such a high download speed but a pathetic upload rate.
      Whenever i upload something, ANYTHING, i cannot browse the internet at all. It's as if uploading complete halts any downloading in progress. IE: Cant connect to xbox live, cant go on myspace etc.

      Is this normal for my broadband package, or should i be getting alot higher?
      If so, how should i go about enquiring about this?

      Just FYI;
      It's not a computer issue; windows pcs and macs have the problem.
      I've replaced filters and test all the phone lines and the result remains the same.
      I've tried turning it off and on again :P

      Here are the stats coming from my router.

      Any help is much appreciated.
      Thanks!

      Your upload looks like 346 to me on that speed test. Where are you getting 30 from ?

      346 is about right for you upstream on that package.

      It says 346, but if you divide both the speedtest results by 10 that's the speed i'm recieving. Whenever i upload, i check and it's always around 30-25kbps. Same with the download speed; divide by 10 and i'm downloading at 702kbps (at the time of the test).
      So should i be uploading at 346kbps, or 34kbps?

      Thank you for your fast reply.

      Re: Is my upload speed normal?

      Why divide by 10? The speed on that test is the speed you have

      That's what it says i have. If it says i have a 300kbps upload speed (according to the site and router stats), and i check my upload speed on streams/ftp/other programs, why does it say im only uploading at 30kbps?

      Does 300kbps=30 in uploading terms? Am i just being stupid?

      Ok, I see whats happening with speeds like your saying 30kbps you need to mulitiply that by 8 (8 bit to a byte and all that) 30 * 8 = 240.

      When you upload using FTP is does munch a fair bit of bandwidth.

      I think there may be a mix up between bits and Bytes.

      You could try shutting down all your browsers and running netstat /b in a Command prompt. You should only have 2 or 3 connections made for your security software and such like. If you do not recognise the exe that is making them, be suspisious. This would have to be done on all the PCs/Macs you have running. BBC iplayer and similar products are P2P and run in the background gobbling up your bandwidth under the name of kservice.exe.

      I have checked all this and i find nothing incriminating on both my mac and PC.
      So, just to confirm, is 30kbps the standard upload rate? Or should i be getting a higher speed?

      EDIT: I just uploaded a few files to test. It starts off at 180kbps! Then drops all the way down to 30..

      30KB/sec is fine, which is what you'd normally see uploading to RS for example...

      doing a speed test will show it about 300kbps...

      So, on an 8MB connection i should expect;
      700kbps download speed
      30kbps upload.

      Is this correct? Just trying to make sure that i am getting the best connection i can possibly recieve.
      Baring in mind my uploads START at 180kbps, then drop all the way down.
      Look at your speedtest, IAmNotTheEnemy. Your downstream is lower than mine, yet your upstream is higher?

      This doesn't explain why, when I'm uploading a file, i cannot download anything whatsoever though. Is this a different issue?
