      Confused: throttling or just useless?

      Hi there,

This is my fifth week with Sky Connect. I was initially stuck on BT's 10-day limit which Sky immediately asked BT to lift, and my router now syncs at 6976 kbps which is pretty good. However, I've only downloaded above 400kbps once in five weeks.

The best I get is at about 2am, downloading at 150-250kbps. I'd be happy if I got that all the time, but 90% of the time I'm limited between 10kbps and 60kbps. Occasionally it goes up a bit but, for example, downloading the 15mb test file from BTOpenWorld peaked at 22kbps.

At about midnight most evenings, the connection suddenly kicks into life. No one else can or is using the connection apart from me and my housemate, so I'm sure it's not being stolen. So what's the problem?

It reminds me of the dark days of the 1990s on restricted dialup connections: barely usable between midday and midnight. I already have an open ticket on tier 1 (or is it 3? Whatever) with Sky but have spent hours and hours trying to phone them without luck.

Right now, I'm downloading a file at 20kbps. The rest of the connection is about as good as Edge on my phone!

      Stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6976 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 30 db 16 db
Noise Margin 8 db 21 db

The noise margin isn't great, but it's plugged into master and I can't do much about it. If I sync at about 7mb without fail, every time, then why the hell isn't my connection as good as it should be?

I'm at the Fulham exchange, which I gather is currently undergoing work to host all of South Kensington (or somewhere like that).

Finally (sorry) - am I actually on Connect or have Sky moved me to their systems? Did a trace the other day and saw mention of Easynet.

And yes, I'm wired. And have relevant microfilters.

      Advice very much welcomed.

      Will

If on Connect then I'm afraid its throttling, its discussed at length here.

throttling - there is a easy fix for this , stop being a download w***e ,
At the end of the day they seem to be capping if you go over 1.5 / 2 Gig a day ,
This is more than fair .

      might be stuck IP profile...

      go to speedtester.bt.com
      enter your phone number
for username enter the mac address on the bottom of your router and add @skydsl to the end - e.g. 002245D6H3S2@skydsl

Totally wrong! I use very little bandwidth, probably a total of 3Gb PER MONTH and I am absolutely throttled to death from 6pm every evening.

Is this fair? I don't think so.

In this case it mite be down to a fault with the VP and this can be checked ,

Do you not feel that 2 Gig a day is fair ?
If you can give a valid point of why not then let me hear it .

Because 3 gig a month is considerably less ?

re: Confused: throttling or just useless?

Well it would appear from my own experience and from others that are still on connect that it has nothing to do with the amount of bandwidth ppl are using, Sky are just throttling all or a vast amount of there customers that are on connect.

You have missed the point completely. I was not complaining about any particular download amounts merely stating that as a low user I am affected by throttling as much as a customer using a larger amount.

This was in reply to your earlier post: "throttling - there is a easy fix for this , stop being a download w***e ,
At the end of the day they seem to be capping if you go over 1.5 / 2 Gig a day ,

My message was simply that even if you download a little you are affected in the same manner.
