Advice NAS drive or online storage

      Hi

I need to share remotely some files with friends so that they can read/edit etc.

I am only just above a novice PC user so how easy is it to set up a NAS
drive on my Sky router that other people can access.

thanks in advance for any help / advice

You can use YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement , there is a max file size but it is quite big and your friends can edit it and send it back this way.

I am always very dubious of just setting up a network drive or folder that can be accessed on the internet.

Also your firewall will need to be configured to allow your friends in.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

You could use Google Documents etc to share files with friends but still limit access. Look at docs.google.com or Google for google docs.

Or you could use skydrive.live.com you get 25 gig online storage free ,

But if you are sure you want to use a NAS it should be ok i mean do most NAS`s not ask for logins and so on ?

Re: Advice NAS drive or online storage

If I just wanted to share a few files with friends I would use an online service such as one of the ones mentioned above (There are also many more).

However a NAS can be used in the home for so much more than remote access to files. I can recommend a Synology NAS ( http://www.synology.com ) which can also act as a media server, CCTV system, Photo viewing/ sharing, Torrent Client, backup system, print server and (as they say on the cheesy ads) much much more.

Adrian is right in that you are allowing others (albeit under password control) into your network by allowing free access to a NAS from the internet - You need to know what you are doing (although it isn't that hard) to make sure this is safe.

You should also make sure that the NAS firmware is regularly updated so there is a maintenance requirement.
