      Noise Margin Drop at Night

      Hi,

My noise margin is usually around 7-8 during the day but it drops considerably in the evening. It sometimes gets as low as 1 or 2. This then causes the odd drop out although my speed is still often around 11mb on the max package.

I have only seen this recently, anyone have any ideas or have similar issues?

      Thanks

Everyone's noise margin drops in the evening (see the first sticky in my signature) - the better the line condition, the smaller the drop. Yours is a big drop i.e. your line is probably not that great

      Please post your router stats.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14570 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 32 db 16 db
Noise Margin 2 db 17 db

The drop has only been recently and the line been fine. I did read some people had this witht he new firmware upgrade.

An attenuation of 32db would normally support a shade under 16meg on a relatively quiet line. You're getting 14.5meg at a rather low 2db noise margin and 11meg with a normal noise margin. Your line is noisy - not terrible but noisy nonetheless.

Which router and firmware are you using? I've not heard of a link between big noise margin swings and a particular firmware version

Have experienced a more stable situation since this update was applied - otherwise similar noise from 9 down to 2/3 after several hours, usually in the evening!
