Re: Sky Broadband Max getting slower and slower

With his attenuation on Max the OP should expect 5-7Mbs. As has been pointed out the low noise margin indicates that he is not capped, either manually or by DLM. It does look like DLM has been active on the line and may be responsible for the original fall in speed, but not the current condition. Until he removes the face plate from the Master socket and plugs into the Test socket, it is not possible to say whether the low speed is due to the internal (very likely) or the external wiring. With rental with Sky, fixing any external faults are their responsibility, although the actual work may be done by BTO.

When contacting Sky about broadband it is always advisable to use a Sky router. They are not trained in troube-shooting other routers and will be within their rights to refuse help.

Sorry, for some reason I thought his Attn was a lot lower than it is, you are correct 5-7Mb once he has sorted the line issues.

You should be getting similar speeds to myself. I get between 6 - 7 meg with a similar attenuation.

Looks like DLM or capped to me.

      Your original stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 383 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 23.2 db
Noise Margin 6.9 db 10.5 db

      Your master socket stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.5 db 23.0 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 11.5 db

Re: Sky Broadband Max getting slower and slower

This is with anouther filter plugged into the

      master socket
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 23.2 db
Noise Margin 10.3 db 11.5 db

      Test Socket
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 23.2 db
Noise Margin 8.2 db 11.5 db

Now to make things interesting with the same filter as above but on the sky router plugged in

      test socket
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 380 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 29.4 db 11.5 db

      main socket
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 380 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.1 db
Noise Margin 28.7 db 11.5 db

edit: and it just updated its self and now i am getting this on the main socket:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 378 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.1 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 11.5 db

Can you find a way to get the noise margin up in the 28's again.

Try to narrow down what is causing it to drop, this is where the fault lies.

Re: Sky Broadband Max getting slower and slower

the noise margin dropped after the sky router firmware updated. So I want a high noise margin then?

Re: Sky Broadband Max getting slower and slower

well after 20minutes on the phone to someone in god knows where it is DLM. I was then trying to ask him how long on average it takes and he said 10 days, then I tried to get the information out of him of when the DLM was started it was like trying to get blood out of a stone and he just kept repeating himself. But apparently someone will call when its done. i just have to like it or lump it for now. do i have to sort out something about the noise margins or will that sort its self out when the DLM is finished?

Re: Sky Broadband Max getting slower and slower

DLM starts the day of activation (if you're a new customer) and runs 24/7/365...the first 10 days are meant to test the line and stabilize it - if it sees errors on the line it reduces the speed until said errors are gone (might also be line noise)...

it then monitors the connection to see if setup has been changed and SNR has increased allowing it to adjust the line...and the 10 days start again to get a better speed and so on...

in your case, something's wrong at your end causing the DLM to cap the line down to VERY slow speeds to keep stable...correct that and you can then get better speed!!

Well I was signed up well over a year ago but told them to forget about it as I called up twice with two different mac codes after the first one expired and I told them to forget it as I wasn't prepared to call up and get a third mac code. Then last november I decided to give them anouther go as I wasn't happy with my isp and I called up sky and they said thats wierd we were already signed up but just waiting on a mac code. so its been running 3 months now. so far this evening I have checked all the connections and even wired everything up to anouther master socket I had, and just had it on that. and I got the same stats. I have got it running on the sky router now and I am just going to leave it and see what happens.
