      My line attenuation has dropped...

      hey ppl

i have just got my new replacement router ...i plugged it in and noticed my line attenution has dropped from 63.5db to 59db?

does this mean i could actually push more towards 2.7 mb - 3mb?

      heres my stats..
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2432 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 59 db 31 db
Noise Margin 5 db 14 db

re: My line attenuation has dropped...

If your attenuation drop coincided with getting the new router then probably no.

There are only four reasons for the attenuation to change:
      1. the frequency being measured has changed e.g. G.DMT reads 3-4db lower than ADSL2+
      2. the router used to measure the attenuation has changed i.e. different routers measure differently
      3. a fault on the line has been fixed e.g. corrosion cleared up, water ingress removed etc
      4. your line is suddenly shorter i.e. BT have swapped pairs for a shorter run

My bet would be on the first (sure you haven't set the new router to G.DMT?) plus the second.

If Christmas has come late for you then I guess it could be the latter two.

re: My line attenuation has dropped...

well 1 is out the window as ive been on G.DMT since Aug 08

2 i was using the netgear v1 before and it gave me 63.5 and ive plugged the v2 in and it gives me 60db then a firmware upgrade changed it again to 59db

3 um well bt did fix my line back in august by swapping my pairs.... so thats possable

and option 4 i doubt that is possable...

hmm its strange how it changed

      cheers saturday

Changes of 0.5db or even 1db aren't that unusual and are generally just normal variation (lots of reasons for this).

      No.

DLM can only influence attenuation through changing ADSL mode. Has it changed?

Re: My line attenuation has dropped...

It could go back to 59db after awhile but at least its not 63.5 as you say whole numbers. So when its 60db it could be 59.5
